As I'm sitting here with one of my Golden Retrievers glued to my leg because of fireworks going off....thought I'd ask how everyone's dogs do with fireworks? Anything work for those that are freaked out? Vet gave me some doggie downers but they don't seem to do a whole bunch to help.

My dog looked at me. Sighed. Went back to sleep. She is 3 years old so it isn't an age thing lol. Just been exceptional with them.

My 10 year old German Shepherd is scared to death of them and always has been. Unfortunately, it's too hot to let him stay in the garage.

My dogs have never been afraid. They sit and watch. My min pin just watches in excitement which is pretty awesome.

Mine barks at every firecracker, but when we put her in the basement in her pen, she seems fine. So we usually put her down early on the 4th.

Have a golden and an Aussie. The golden hates them and is whining and all over me. The Aussie doesn't care until the golden gets upset and then she's upset. I dread the fireworks each year. I usual kennel them in the basement and turn up their tv so they calm down.

I heard those thunder vests really work. It is something about it being wrapped tight around them that keeps them calm. I have not tried it, but I know people who swear by it.

Our old dog used to hate them,(medium German Shep/beagle mix) get all wound up running like a maniac. Here are a few things that worked .
Don't count on Benadryl or Doggie downers they seem to work best if 1)the fireworks don't last that long or 2) doesnt really get that worked up. Since it seems dog glued to your leg and not running around this might work for ya.

Proven method #1) use exercise to drain the dogs energy. I would take the dog out for a brisk 1.5hr walk about 2 hrs before the fireworks would begin. Every dog is different but basically you want to drain as much energy so that when the fireworks start the dog is focused more on rest than worrying about the fireworks.

#2) for this one you will not get to see the fireworks. about half hour before the fireworks start begin playing with them with there favorite toy/treats. and basically play with them and keep the dogs mind distracted, remember dogs can only focus on one thing at a time so if they are foucused on playing they cant worry about fireworks.

Thankfully our dog doesn't mind the fireworks or thunder at all. I've walked him last minute in a storm once and he seemed to love it. My father's dog who hes had for 8 years is a big baby. Absolutely terrified of them.

My 10 year old Golden could care less...he does the sigh and lay back down routine too. It's the younger one that goes nutso. He's adopted, so no idea what he's dealt with before. Made the mistake of putting him in the basement without being in his kennel. Pretty much shredded the bottom of a solid wood door. Tried Benadryl with no luck. Maybe I'll check out the thunder vest...

My old mutt used to really freak out over the fireworks....but now she is pretty much deaf, problem solved. The dog I had before this one use to chase the firecrackers, which presented a whole different problem.

thankfully my pit is deaf and has been since birth, so loud noises/gunshots dont bother him, but he has a fascination with lights and shadows, so when he finally does notice the fireworks, he gets all excited and tries to chase the lights/shadows on the ground, its quite entertaining. my folks have german shepards, his female is okay with fireworks, not too keen on gunshots though, while his male could care less, when we're out back shooting, hes usually laying a few feet away from us.

I feel your pain. Our Norfolk terrier has panic attacks at storms and fireworks. In fact, I can't even turn on my surround sound sub woofer lol.

Right now he's medicated waiting for it to start in the neighborhood.
