My dogs hate fireworks, but they don't really give a crap about them if they have a big raw hide bone to gnaw on, so that's what they get every time one of these holidays rolls around.

My Sheltie is scared shitless and tries to claw his way into my chest like he thinks he's getting back into the womb or something. The miniature Pom gets a little shaky and the standard sized Pom couldn't care less. In fact he just kicked the Sheltie in the nuts and barked at him to dog up.

As I'm sitting here with one of my Golden Retrievers glued to my leg because of fireworks going off....thought I'd ask how everyone's dogs do with fireworks? Anything work for those that are freaked out? Vet gave me some doggie downers but they don't seem to do a whole bunch to help.
You are to give the downers to the dog! :)
I took the doggie downers...it's been a great night. No idea what the dog's doing...

I've had three Shelties in the past that all acted like vaginas about the fireworks. Tails between the legs, ears back, whole nine. My current Sheltie gets super hype when the fireworks go off and is excited as all hell which is a refreshing departure from the past experiences with dogs and fireworks.

I'm lucky. I have a boxer, that I'm sure is the best dog ever. (He wasn't the best puppy ever.) He's indifferent to gunshots and fireworks, but does prefer to be indoors when there is thunder.
My brother, who lives near the city's annual display, had a dog that would immediately evacuate herself, wherever she happened to be, at the beginning of the fireworks show, and would quiver in terror long past when they ended. I could never convince him to just take her for a car ride, out of town, during the display.

As Will mentioned, storms don't phase our dog.. I actually saw that a family in our area lost their dog last night.. The dog ran away because of fireworks. :( poor dog. I hope they find him. I'm sooo thankful our dog doesn't care

One of my two GSD pups went nuts last night.. the other couldnt have cared less...

funny watching two dogs.. roughly the same age.. of the same breed.. that have been raised in the exact same conditions, etc.... have two completely different responses..

Yeah I'm pretty lucky, my girl could care less about the noise. She just lays there asleep.
I have heard it helps to give them a crate covered on all side but the door with a sheet. It gives them a sense of security.

Played a lot of fetch, went for a walk, early before the bulk of the fireworks started. Then spaced out a couple of doggie downers throughout the night - and Duke did really well. First time he's not completely freaked out. Combo of both really seemed to do the trick! Of course it'll be the neighbor kids blowing stuff up tonight outta the blue that gets him going!

It is crazy how different dogs react.....
