I lit up a FFOX Super Belicoso at halftime that I've been sitting on for a year or so. The light was great, flavorful. Draw was tight so I clipped a little more off the head. Almost halfway through it lost the flavor and became very bitter. After 5 or so more draws, I had to lay it down. I tried to get past the bitter taste but couldn't do it.

Any other guys experience this with an Opus? I'm sure it's possible with any cigar, but I expected a lot more from this stick.

Anyway, back to the shutout of Denver...

I think everybody has had it happen with at least one super-premium stick. Heck, on the Dirty Ashes - he reviews a Cohiba EL Pyramide ('06) that he pitched halfway through because it was so bitter.

I've only smoked two. Both had good age. One was a top ten all time smoke for me- just superb.

The other I had to pitch... That's why I haven't gone back to the well on them I guess. There's so many smokes I LOVE that are cheaper by several dollars I just don't see the point. But I totally understand those who freak out for an opus. A good one is hard to beat.

Tossed a Hererra Esteli 2x for turning very bitter/sour.

Any other smokes that had that problem I clipped a little more off, purged and kept going with no problems.

Tossed a no.5

Most tar ever ...
I'm guessing Dan nailed the issue. The cigar may of built a ton of tar. Opus have a funny way of building tar at the head when smoked, especially the ones with tapered heads. The tar then gets on your palette and...bitter!

Yes, very early on. What I have learned is that Opus' require significant down time. I sit mine down for a minimum of two years.

Tossed a 2009 la verite. Draw was so tight, flavor wasn't there. I took it apart carefully and found a big as vein running down the center. I tweeted a pic of it to Pete. You feel bad because of the expense and the expectation but a bad stick is just a bad stick.

I tossed an opus last year. Had a little crack in the wrapper and I could not get it to smoke for anything

Ever since Opus has come on the scene I've never felt the need to toss one. I don't smoke them ROTT and let them marinate for at least 6 months in a 65% environment. I have tossed some super premiums though but Opus isn't one of them.

I've never tossed an Opus X out, However the new Destino Opus came damn close to it. I've smoked a handful of the new Destino Al Siglo Opus X Belicoso and the that 2 I have smoked almost got pitched at the half way point. I just don't care for the blend at all. I love the normal production Opus X, but not this new Destino blend.

Had a brutal Opusx this weekend, think partially the humidity here but it turned sour as all get out and just mehh. I need to try dry boxing for a little first to see if that helps. For the other 95% of the time they have all been glorious, im just so dam impatient though LOL to let em sit and rest.

I've never pitched an Opus, but I've only smoked a couple in my life.

That being said, I've pitched many cigars. Cigars that got high ratings, and great reviews. Whether due to improper storage, or my impatience in not letting them rest, or them being in a sick period, or whatever, I've never let a band keep me from pitching a crappy stick and moving on. Life's too short, and I'm too busy to have one of my smoking experiences ruined by sucking down a crappy cigar just because of the label.
