If the oils/tar build up blowing the cigar out will save it. It not as easy to explain through a forum but here goes........
Knock off the ash
Light your lighter, hold it to the end of the cigar as if you were lighting it for the first time. (It should be burning already)
Puff 1 or 2 times with the lighter lit on the amber to get it burning hot
Then with the flame still on the amber slowly blow out through the cigar.
This will produce a big flame at the end. DON'T worry it isn't going to hurt the cigar, just don't burn yourself!
Continuously blow until the flame calms down and is almost back to normal. This can take 3-10 seconds depending on the build up.
Then put your lighter away and enjoy the freshness of a like new tasting cigar.

As you smoke a cigar, depending on the moisture content of the tobacco, oils/tar build up behind the amber an move back as you smoke. By blowing out the cigar you burn those unwanted oils/tar off creating a like new cigar. This will eliminate that bitter unwanted taste. It can be done pretty much as many times as you like throughout a cigar. Mainly I do it during the final third when some cigars start to get that overwhelming bitterness. But it can be used at anytime to save a good cigar.

That's my 2 cents :)

Yeah, 10 yrs. ago. It was my wedding night and I was pretty lit and decided to light up a Power Ranger on an empty stomach. Well.. a short time into the cigar I had to chunk it before I hurled everywhere. I always keep Opus on hand and after many years of smoking them I've learned that I prefer them with at least 3-5 yrs. on them.

Had a brutal Opusx this weekend, think partially the humidity here but it turned sour as all get out and just mehh. I need to try dry boxing for a little first to see if that helps. For the other 95% of the time they have all been glorious, im just so dam impatient though LOL to let em sit and rest.
Dry boxing doesn't work! Store your stash al a lower RH!

What RH do u store at? Does your RH fluctuate a lot? Both can cause bitter taste.
Good question here...Opus cigars...IMO thrive at 64% and if they are above 66% they tend to taste a bit acrid and don't smoke as well. It is a densely packed cigar and having the RH too high will cause it to smoke wet and plugged.

I lit up a FFOX Super Belicoso at halftime that I've been sitting on for a year or so. The light was great, flavorful. Draw was tight so I clipped a little more off the head. Almost halfway through it lost the flavor and became very bitter. After 5 or so more draws, I had to lay it down. I tried to get past the bitter taste but couldn't do it.

Any other guys experience this with an Opus? I'm sure it's possible with any cigar, but I expected a lot more from this stick.

Anyway, back to the shutout of Denver...
Yeah i did last year. Sadly it was one of those times you can't decide on what to buy (smoking it that day) and the shop has their opus way over priced. I splurged, nothing else sounded good. Got back to the Halloween party i went to and lit it up. Wouldn't draw. Puff puff nothing. What little smoke i did get was terrible. Rex was there. He couldn't believe it and suggested I go let the store know. In the nicest way possible of course. Its not their fault but maybe they'll replace it. I passed. I just counted it as my loss

Just lit my first opus light night. To be honest it had a shitty burn and was pretty bad. I'll be trying another one when I get to Emerson's again as I'm sure this was one in a thousand that wasn't good. I've stored this one at 66 tho, maybe that was too high. The thing tunneled the whole time, I've never had a cigar that burnt as strange. I'm gonna try to get my hands on one with some age as well as a new one to compare the two . Hopefully this was a fluke.

That being said I didn't want to pitch it, can't give up on the first one even if it was horrible.

My RH doesn't fluctuate much, it's between 65-67 lately. I don't have much experience with Opus as far as if they taste better when they are drier or more moist. I'll pick up another one and see.
