Yesterday I went fishing for the first time. Since I was a kid, that was one of my small dreams to accomplish and never did cuz my uncle, who took me fishing with him, never let me cast or reel or anything, just watch. But yesterday, I got the opportunity to fish for the first time, and caught a bluegill and 2 bass...it was exciting and fun. I wanna keep on doing it buuuut, in almost 2 weeks I'll be arriving DC to live there for a few months for an internship. I wanted to know the basics.

I've read many guides but I want someone experienced here to guide me hehe...I'm thinking about bass fishing aaand Snakehead fishing (wanna have fun with that), so I'll need what? Fishing rod, reel, what else? Is it a good idea to buy a fishing rod/reel combo? Like the Okuma Tundra combo which is $40 and holds 15 LB according to what I read?

Thanks

DC as in District of Columbia?

there is some pretty decent bass fishing.. as well as crappie on some parts of the potomac river surrounding the city (not too far to drive, etc..)...

Within a couple of hours of DC there are some nice lakes in both Virginia and Maryland that offer good fishing as well...

There's always the atlantic oceanc just a short distance away as well.. if you want to up your game and go for salt water...

I have never done snakehead..

Im not that much of an angler.. my wife loves to fish (she and her father used to go all the time when she was growing up.. its one of her favorite childhood memories.. and she still loves to fish with him..)..

I go reluctantly.. my kids like it.. my wife likes it.. etc.... so when I go.. I bait hooks, drink beer, and drive the boat lol... and pretend like I care if I actually catch something...

That said.. one of the most fun days I have ever experienced was spent shark fishing with a couple of buddies of mine off the coast of Miami several years ago...

We managed to pull in a 9+ foot hammerhead (and a few other smaller sharks).. it took the three of us a couple of hours to actually get the thing into the boat after we hooked it.. it was a blast...

As far as fishing equipment goes.. one of the guys that spends more time on the water around DC can probably tell you what is most suitable..

When I lived there I just used a simple zebco rod/reel that I picked up at Wal-mart probably 20 years ago for about $25.. and Ive got a small tackle box with a variety of lures/worms, etc... nothing really special at all..

You can find shops in/around DC that will sell you everything from low cost/low end equipment to very high end/specialized equipment.. youll have lots of options to choose from...

on another note.. I try to get to DC once every couple of months for a day or two.. I normally stay downtown, at the Courtyard Marriott thats a couple of blocks from the State Department.. If/when I get there next, we'll have to link up and share a smoke...

I was thinking about buying that Zebco, or a Okuma Tundra which holds 15 pounds tops (which would be perfect for a Snakehead). It is a reel/rod combo sold in Amazon for $25-$40 bucks. Thanks on the tackle box...also, I'm doing some research for the fishing license...although I don't think I'll be able to fish on winter, or can it be done?

And yes, I'll be near the Capitol (like 2 minutes away, so we can get together whenever you want! You'll probably have my addy before that since you are on my hitlist when I arrive :p

Lol. That was last year, I don't think they are offering that this year. I'm thinking about going fishing in the Potomac since there's a big population of snakeheads and it is not so contaminated like the Anacostia. I'll be buying a 1-year license when I get there.

I never tire of watching that vid

Apaniagua, the Potomac is a fantastic fishery. Pretty sure license should be relatively easy - I think DC, MD, and VA all have reciprocal agreements for a good stretch of the river. I assume you'll have a car while here? Lots of places to catch bass in the Potomac - especially if you don't plan to eat them.
