Supply and Demand, what happens every year around spring break and this time of year.. Gas prices go up because everybody is traveling...

Unfortunately I think that it is now a fact of life...

Of course, gas is selling for more than I want to pay. But the world doesn't revolve around me and my wants or needs.

To those who insist that it's going for more than it should, I pose the question, how much should it cost and why?

In the interest of full disclosure I have to begin by saying that I work for a gasoline retailer that is about to merge with a refining company.

The reason fuel prices are so unstable is the commodities market. The speculators are driving up the price of gas. Contracts are bought and sold from six months to two years out. It's a crazy system.

Oil companies are making out. Refiners are making out. (One is about to plop down $70 million for my company.) Retailers are getting hosed. One of our competitiors lost $800,000 just last quarter selling gasoline. The price you are paying at the pump is as low as the retailers can make it. There is a tremendous amount of competition at the street level for your fuel dollar. All of the money is made before it gets to the gas station.

oh yea the gas stations are not making very much money at all.. they are making decimals of pennies on the dollar they just want to make you come inside and buy things that have high margins...

Just filled up here yesterday ... $3.23 / gal for regular.

I've seen some stations as low as $3.09 and some as high as $3.39. I'm thankful my cars are not guzzlers ... 25mpg in my Mazda3 and 50+ in my Prius.

yea, it is somewhere around that figure.. which is not much at all when you figure it all in... but i think that that will obviously depend on location and gas tax and all of that stuff as well...

It's only going to get worse as summer gets closer.

Damnit, another reason why I miss my motorcycle. 45 mpg riding hard, and 55-60 if I'm crusing around.

Man I need to get a motorcycle. Especially since most of my day to day traveling is stop and go at stop lights in the city.
