Ted, I do understand your point from a personal perspective. Most people pay into the system much more than they get out of it. If it were my knee I would probably want the instant MRI also. I would however get it injected first. I just want to make one point. If all physicians jumped the gun and ordered big dollar tests everytime someone had pain...the system would be either bankrupt or you would be paying quadruple the rates you pay now. Starting with conservative treatment actually takes care of about 90% of the joint/back pain that I see. If I ordered MRI's on them all it would be poor medicine. It would only serve to raise your rates.

My money is on a very common condition called PFS - Patella Femoral Syndrome. Usually associated with a recent increase in physical activity e.g. running, walking, bike riding, sports etc. Responds well to NSAIDS and physical therapy. Good news is it is usually the diagnosis when the MRI is unremarkable for a tear. Nothing against orthopods but they tend to jump to MRI's first in order to try and find a "surgical" cause for which they can justify a scope. Just my 2 cents. Thanks.

You are a wise man. PFS is very possible. Physical therapy and leg strengthening exercises work wonders. Your comment about ortho docs jumping to an MRI is right on target. Surgeons like to cut, heck that's why they are surgeons.
