I didn't say anything about rules. Bu hey, if it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it is probably a troll.

Alright, guns kill people, and Uzis are guns made for killing people (can't make the hunting argument there...), so why no fuss about the MUWAT?
MUWAT is a reference to a Public Enemy tune... so that takes the "bite" off, I guess.

OK. That's weird. Just for clarification, I am NOT the same Jason Russell who is a co-founder of Invisible Children! LOL.

That being said...eh. I'm still not convinced. Why wait until all of this hullabaloo was stirred up to come out with this? Seems like a pretty poor promotional concept to me.

I guess ultimately a portion of the proceeds will go to keep kids from situations depicted in the art, so that's good.

Probably would have been a good idea on their part to mention this from the start...

So went to the Invisible Children website, looked for anything in their news or blog section on what Gran Habano is doing and could not find any info. Seems like if a company was donating a % of money from sells of a product that IC would be more then happy to pass along the information. Where there I decided to look at their store at the products they have for sale and see if they have any images like then ones on the cigar boxes, and no dice, nothing at all like them.

To say you are using the images to support a group like Invisible Children is the same as putting a slaughtered dog painting on the box and saying its to support the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). Just saying.

Yep. Did the same exact thing. Same results.

Damn you guys are overblowing this to stellar proportions. Not sure I understand the GH hate. The artist (Kid) is a friend of Rico's... I don't believe earlier comments stated anything about the artist having any official affiliation with Save the Children, so not sure why anyone would expect his art to be on their page. The full press release (as opposed to just excerpts in the previous link) can be found here:

http://ghcigars.com/gran-habano-news/stk-zulu-zulu/934/

The fact he's contributing to the particular cause is a good thing, IMHO...not a reason to get bashed. If Rico wanted to call attention to the particular subject by using this artwork, I guess he's succeeded there- but I don't see it as a reason to bash him or his company. To think it's a cover up or afterthought, when the artists name is plainly signed on the artwork prior to this latest release is silly IMHO.

I love how this is referred to as artwork and the photoshop user is referred to as an artist. Going to google, copying a photo into photoshop and using a black and white cut out effect is not making art. Then again, with out this effect I think it would be a lot harder to sell people on the fact that their cigar box is tasteful.

It seems the deeper you get into this the more it seems to fail the "smell" test. At the very least this has got to rank as one of the most poorly executed concepts we've seen in the cigar industry. Sure it has generated a good bit of buzz but it seems to leave most with an uneasy and unfavorable feeling toward the brand.

The afterthought is claiming this was done to benefit a cause, not that the artist was used. I don't even know where you are trying to come from with that angle...doesn't make sense. No one questioned the, ahem, after reading Hendy's post, "artist" being involved. The question was not why the guy's work, sorry at this point I can't even put artist in quotes and italics and make it work, wasn't on the website, but why no mention whatsoever of this project was. When a major manufacturer works with a specific cause on something like this, they tend to get that cause involved in some way or other. It keeps things like this from happening, because I can pretty much guarantee that said group would have said, "uh, no thanks" had this project been presented to them as it is being handled.

I'm pretty certain someone posted earlier that the 3 person murial was supposedly painted on the outside of the GH factory. You think he photoshopped that one too, or perhaps just artfully recreated it?

Also, I think the age thing was established once GH Cigars clarified what was going on with the latest press release. The assumption with that last press release is that the subject matter is is far from tasteful, so not sure why the box art would be expected to be.

Your interpretation of what "makes it art" isn't really relevant- and there are a lot of "artists" that would disagree with you I'm sure- but your point goes all the way back to the early days of rap music and if taking samples of other artists music to create new music was art or theft, yes?
