Hello to all.
After ditching cigarettes the middle of last year, I have begun the descent(?!) into the world of cigar smoking.
I have had a very few "sticks" over the years, probably the finest would be some Montecristos my boss would bring for me to company outings.
Of course, I also smoked Swishers in my high school days amd Robt Burns Black Watch while I was in the service (not exactly the cream of the crop here . . .).
Bought four "loosies" from a local B & M, one of which was a Baccarat Toro that I found surprisingly tasty (is that a sin??). the others are still waiting for me , but include an A Fuente and an Uppman.
Ordered a humidor, still waiting for its arrival from Tampa Humidor (very nice people there, they have already displayed excellent customer service).
I really have no idea of what I am doing as yet, but hopefully I can learn some of the do's and don'ts of the hobby (obsession??).
I am located just across the river from Omaha, we seem to have several very good B & M shops here, and I plan to give each of them a shot.
Any recommendations from youse guys will be appreciated.

Thanks. Chris

Hello and welcome aboard.

As a "newbie" myself I usually listen a lot to the brothers here and get recommendations. You can also set your self up with a newbie trade and get a great variety of sticks. Also if you know what you have enjoyed talk to the folks at your local shop and I am sure they can recommend some great sticks.

When you get your humidor, you need to season it for at least a week, and that should be enough time to order yourdelf some of the humidity beads. They will help take a lot of the guess work out of humidifying your smokes.

BTW WELCOME

I puchased a Torino from Tampa, 100-150 count.
Have been reading about the beads and they seem like a good theory.
If I use the beads, do I even need the humidification device that is pictured in the inside of the lid?
Do most people buy the raw beads and devise their own container, or buy them in the tubes?
And can I more or less dispense with worrying about the hygrometer, since it seems the alanlog ones are more for display than accuracy?
So much to learn, so little brain left . . .

Hello fellow river rat! All of the shops in Omaha are worth checking out. I normally go to Ted's Tobacco, but I haven't been in Omaha for some time. (I live in Nebr. City and I waste all of my hard earn gas money driving weekly to Lincoln to herf.)

Howdy and welcome! Glad to have you!

I like The Puck a whole bunch as a way to hold beads. And it comes with the beads, so you can't really go wrong. And yeah, if you want an accurate hygrometer you'll need to go digital. A lot of guys don't worry about the hygrometer if they've got the beads.

Beads equal not as many worries, but to season your humi, you will want a good hygro to make sure your humi is hold humidity correctly. After that the analog hygro you have in the lid of you humi will look good, but that's about all.
