How about some insight on the project you are working on?
Well let me start at the beginning, by giving you guys a brief introduction to Jose Moreno Gomez, yeah that's me,

born in Havana i started my tobacco career at the age of 15 entering on 26 February 1946 at Cifuente y Cia better known as the Partagas Factory in that time owned by the brothers Rafael & Manolo Cifuente after Castro came to power i worked for Consolidado (Todays Tabacuba) where i supervised together with Jose Ramon Sanchez the General Managers of the bigger factories in Havana, Partagas, H Upmann, Romeo y Julieta, Jose Gener and La Corona, in 1967 i was appointed to run together with Osvaldo Cardentey, Plan Especial Tabaquera which has the objective to train young woman to become a cigar maker.

i left Cuba in 1970 to Miami where i worked in various small cigar factories (chinchales) i realized i couldn't explore my knowledge on tobacco so i solicited to work in the Dominican Republic.
In 1985 i started working in the Matasa Factory, i became production manager, here i worked till 1997, then i started up and runned factory number 4 for the Fuente Family, had a brief project in Indonesia where i trained people how to roll cigars at the Taru Martani Factory in Yogyakarta, then i went back to the DR where i runned the factory for my old friend the late Pedro Martin.

Now i am taking it more easy but still make cigars, and as mentioned do a new project which will start soon, in may i will launch a website called mycubanwheel.com (currently under construction) where i will offer cigars which will please any smoker which is looking to smoke great cigars in the Old Cuban fashion without hurting pockets

I always worked backstage for/with others so to start something new on my age is not easy, i was advised to work through the internet, so after thinking and thinking i deciced to give it a shot, if you don't try it you will never know,
my knowlegde to work with computers is limited so i have an assistant who helps me with this, as for the cigars, i have a select tiny group of top cigarmakers which are trained by me and have years of experience making cigars using the entubar bunch methode and a real triple cap head finish.

i cherry picked certain tobacco's which i blended in various Blends, these blends where made trying to reflect the flavour of the cigars we use to make in the 50's at partagas, i picked two blends and for the first release i made 5 sizes in one of these blend, each size comes packed in a classic 50 count cabinet style box, the first blend is medium to full bodied as the market seems to like that, but certainly not one dimensional, rather full flavour with a rich cubanesque taste profil. at the end of the day it comes all to the person who's gona smoke the cigar, each cigar is at least aged for 3 to 6 months after rolling so that's more or less what i can tell you for now, i just encourage every cigar lover to try them out and to do so i made a special 10 count seleccion box , holding 2 cigars in each size, this box we will offer at a superlow price so everybody can afford to try them, so guys just stay tuned and feel free to sign up for the news letter through the fan page on facebook, as i will raffle 100 Free Seleccion Boxes among the first 500 newsletter subscribers, this will be on may 21st, for anybody who is not on Facebook, you can just drop me an e mail to info@mycubanwheel.com and i will get you signed up, as said the website is still under construction and will be launched somewhere around may 20th.

thank you, saludos Moreno

Hola Moreno,

I just sent you an email to sign up for your newsletter. I am really looking forward to trying your new blend!

For contributing to Herfs, my suggestion would be to watch the Herf Forum for announcements of upcoming events http://www.botl.org/community/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=32 and then contact the person who is organizing things to offer your contribution. I'm not sure if that is the right way, but that is how I would do it if I were in your shoes. You might also want to consider attending an event or two if you are able to. This would be a nice personal touch that could really help you market your new brand. I'm sure that many people would enjoy the opportunity to meet you in person and would be more exited to help you promote your new brand afterwards.

Best regards,

Rupe

Moreno.

I was just about to put my head to rest tonight when I read your story and the full thread that accompanied it. I just wanted to say that it is a beautiful journey through life and we are privileged to have you join us.

I met Pedro Martin in 1995 and always appreciated him as more than just an outstanding cigar maker, but one of the kindest, most humane, most incredible people ever. This is a man who was personally responsible for bringing over 50 Cubans to the US and having them live in his house, feed them, get them started, and follow through with their lives. Even sometimes, at the expense of his own family.

Pedro Martin was indeed more than the original owner of Tropical Tobacco, he was one of the best people to grace the cigar industry. I went to his recent funeral with the family and could not stop balling the entire time. Listening to the stories from his daughter and sons is something that I will never forget.

Hope to see you some day soon in the D.R.

Best,
JD
