Home defense weapon

I keep my NE .410 loaded with 6 shot for in my home..i dont want any lead going thru the wall and killin ppl nxt door...i kinda like them..but then again i also sleep with my AR at bedside and a .40 s&w under my pillow
So, those of you that have small kids at home, what would you suggest? And where do you keep the weapon? Doesn't really make sense to keep a home defense weapon locked up, because by the time you get it out, it's probably too late.
My biggest fear would be one of my kids getting a hold of a weapon. We do have an alarm in our house, but if someone wants in, they'll get in.

They have a safe that reads your fingerprint and they also have ones that will unlock with a quick combo lock. Those would be your best bet. I always thought you should lock it up in the day and put it under the pillow at night.
