Nice price. The 250 GB does kind of kill it though.

I've been doing some more research and getting a idea of what I want to be able to do. If possible, I want:

  • Ethernet connected
  • Ready access to the files (essentially a shared external drive)
  • Some redundancy (RAID 1?)
  • Some error correction
  • Seamless access (no log in each restart for computer or NAS)
  • Expandable
  • Print Server Capable

Not sure if all of this is possible. Right now we have 2 Dell notebooks and a wireless router (G). The wife isn't going to want any involved process for use and I'm not Linux oriented and would have no idea how to tweak the system. I'm looking at the D-Link DNS-323, but there is the logon issue.....

Put together a Linux box with two (or more) huge hard drives. If you really want to get fancy, Adaptec makes several hardware RAID cards. I manage several servers at work and I won't have any server without at least mirrored hard drives.

I've become convinced that either mirrored or striped drives are the way to go now. I'm not quite willing to lay out the money for a system that has effective striping (3 or more drives). So I'll be going with a Mirrored system.
