Good, sound advice in this thread. One more thing. For the first year or so, do not buy a box of anything, even if you've smoked a 5ver and loved every one. Over the next year, your palate WILL CHANGE. The cigars you love now, you may hate down the road. Many of us bought boxes of stuff early on that we loved at the time, only to regret it later on.

You can also paste some links here of stuff you're thinking of buying and get some opinions that way. I might be in a minority here, but some of those 10 stick sampler+humidor deals can be a good way to go, and seem to be improving as to what they include. I got one with a Patel, Oliva, AB etc. as well the usual General Cigar/Altadis stuff.

+1 on keeping notes, including what the cigars are actually made of. I'm discovering I'm not crazy about corojo wrappers for example, unless it's a Camacho.

Like has already been said, start with singles. I made the mistake of buying "deals" the first time I went on the devil site and purchased based on their descriptions. I still have a few of those cigars 5 years later, I only give them away to people I don't want to share anymore cigars with:halfgrinw. After that lesson I smoked my way through the walk in humidor at the B&M til I decided what was really a deal.

I'm no expert by any means, but I agree with c.ortiz on the sampler idea. That's what I've been doing and it's been great so far. There are plenty of good deals on 10-20 cigar samplers. You get to try plenty of different brands, wraps and fillers. And if you don't like a stick, you're only out $2-3.
