"Many fashion historians believe that the thong first appeared in the 1939 World's Fair. New York Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia ordered the city's nude dancers to cover themselves and the thong was invented to just barely do the job.

Fashion designer, Rudi Gernreich has been credited with introducing the first thong bikini in 1974. Another reference states that thongs, originally called tangas, first hit the beaches of Brazil in 1977."

"The Japanese, innovators of so much else, launched the silicone breast implant craze.

For the Japanese, large breasts have not historically been sexually charged. The kimono, the traditional Japanese robe, is actually chest-minimizing. “The erotic area that was considered desirable was the nape of the neck,” says Marilyn Yalom, author of The History of The Breast. Where, then, did a desire for bigger breasts come from?

The answer lies with American soldiers. They would pay more for prostitutes with big bosoms when they were stationed in Japan. “These women felt that they wanted to have their breasts enlarged because of the service men and their western ideal...this is part of the western invasion process,” Yalom says.

The average Japanese woman is not as endowed as the average American woman. The Japanese prostitutes, at first, tried injecting saline solution or goat’s milk into their breasts. However, these liquids dissipated quickly into the body, leaving only infections.

The U.S. military provided the solution when it began using silicone for military applications. History does not record who the first woman was to try injecting silicone into her breasts. However, silicone was a success as far as breast enhancement went. By the 1940’s, silicone that had been stolen from the military was the most popular item on the Japanese black market.

Doctors in America soon heard about this operation and began offering it to American film stars and socialites."

"Men and women have worn underwear for thousands of years, though its doubtful anybody today would be caught dead in some of the earliest models! Loincloths were originally outerwear, first worn by cave dwellers, then Egyptians and Romans, gradually becoming underwear along the way.

Around the 13th Century, pull on underpants were invented and underwear became an important garment. Not only did underwear help shape the wearer’s figure, it also kept their clean clothes from touching skin. In Europe the underwear evolution went into full swing – men started wearing corsets, cod pieces, stockings, long johns, undershirts and drawers.

Women’s underwear was also very elaborate and included hoop-skirts, corsets and bum rolls. Luckily for the ladies it simplified around the 1700s and 1800s to include garters, lace corsets, knickers, petticoats and stocking suspenders. The brassiere didn’t appear until the early 1900s.

Underwear has continued to change significantly this Century, helping create the shape and look for the outer clothes we wear. From the flattener bras of the 1920s, the layered petticoats of the 1950s, to the cleavage enhancing bras of the 1990s, underwear has played a big part in fashion trends.

In recent decades, underwear has offered wearers far more variety and is designed for specific age groups and purposes. Holeproof makes a large range of underwear to suit all occasions including sport, casual, fashion, figure enhancement and warmth (thermals). "

All invented to make us women even more freaking uncomfortable, as if high heels, plucking eyebrows, and crazy stupid diets weren't bad enough. We got the crap end of the stick when it comes to what we 'should' look like. :disappoin

Then again, I will admit that I hear alot of men talk about the pressure they feel to look good too. I'm just going to conclude with 'society sucks'.
