Well, I'm from western Sydney, Aus, and unfortunately there is this perception out here that only the upper class smoke cigars (if they found out that some online retailers have cigars for $1, they would flip out), so most people that see you smoking a cigar go "ooooooo, watch out!"
a few Aussie botl have been meeting up every thursday for a month or so now at the local RSL, we normally clear out the smoking veranda pretty quick
this one time a drunken bogan (not sure what the Yank version of a bogan is?) came out for a durry and started having a go at us about how bad cigars are for your health and you dont know whats in them and noone knows what the brown stuff on the outside of a cigar is blah blah blah. unfortunately for him, the BOTL he picked an argument with was SuprHasan, who made this guy sit on the floor while he gave him a lesson. He didnt bother us again

I have a path behind the house that leads through my town for bikes, I like to have a nice smoke and go for a walk. Last summer I went for an evening walk and a biker sped past me and snatched the stick out of my mouth, I believe the line that came from his mouth was, " your killing the environment". Needless to say I took off like a bat out of h$ll and freaked the crap out of him with how fast I moved in his direction. Never got him but I've learned to hate bikers and always carry and extra stick with me.

Pepper spray.

That's theft. If you're smoking a $30 Opus, he just stole $30 from you.

I'm not a small guy, if I had caught up to him I would have made sure I got at least my money's worth for the cigar back from him ;)

As a smoker and a cyclist, I am sorry to hear that some d-bag on a (fixie, I presume) bike messed with you like that. That is uncivilized and totally uncalled for.

A few of us South MS BOTL got together to enjoy a few adult beverages and some cigars at a local bar. We ate dinner and had a few drinks outside on the patio which is the smoking section of this establishment. After dinner we all pulled out our cigars to enjoy and an older lady at the table next to us did the "fake cough" and gave us the look. This is the same old lady who was chain smoking cigarettes even while she ate her food. Needless to say I blew my smoke directly at her until she finally decided it was time to go back to the old folks home. It amazes me that someone who can chain smoke cigarettes has the nerve to act that way. Anyway it was a great night with some fellow BOTL.

The fixie hipster. They are a different breed of cyclist, shunned by the rest of us, allowed to roam the streets for sheer bemusement and spectacle. While most cyclists I know are not big cigar buffs, they will generally not complain about a cigar as they sip their craft beer, and some will occasionally join in.

When I read the first post I immediately thought of two positive incidences that actually happened outside of the same tobacco shop in old town San Diego. The first time was when I was there with a buddy and we were smoking a cigar on a busy weekend, which in old town is busy on any weekend, and we noticed a woman that certainly appeared pregnant (and I'm sure she was) not standing not too far from us. When she glanced over my buddy asked if the smoke bothered her and she replied that she was far enough away that the smoke didn't bother her. In fact, she was enjoying the odor. That response definitely took us by surprise.

The second incidence was with me and that buddy plus fellow BOTL sean. The three of us were on the bench right outside the shop and a family sat down in the bench near us. There was what appeared to be the elderly matriarch of the family, and she took up a conversation with us that started with a question regarding our cigars. Probably something about what it was we were smoking. And she proceeded to talk about the fun she was having with her family on vacation in San Diego, and telling us a little bit about where she lives in Georgia. It certainly helps to be in an area frequented by tourists, but the cigar is still a good conversation starter with a complete stranger from a completely different part of the country.
