Well sure, of course....which is why we waited until our previous contract was up to get an iPhone (which was right as the iPhone 3G came out, so the timing was great).

The coverage maps are also pretty different. Coverage on the Cape and up in the mountains of VT, NH, and ME (all of which are only a few hours away and are often used by most people living in the area) varies pretty significantly.
If you don't travel out of a major metropolitan area, I would bet that the service is substantially similar.
