I'd be interested to see GC's contingency plan for what they think will happen when the embargo gets lifted. I'd bet that acquiring strong brands that don't use Cuban brand names like Torano is part of the strategy. Could be messy for them.

I'd also be curious to know what Sam's non-compete clause looks like this time.
IIRC, Torano has been distributing Sam Leccia for a while now. And being that GC just announced their purchase of the Torano portfolio, it seems fitting that they'd get the Leccia name as well.

Sadly I cannot think of any excellent product that once swallowed up by the corporate giant got better or even remained the same. This is big business and many of us have had first hand experience with it.
First Media Quote: We will not make any changes to the quality product of this product
First Board meeting Quote: How are we going to cut costs to pay for this acquisition?

Facts of life. The good news is only what often happens a few years afterwards. After the non-compete is over. Four Kicks is a stellar example.

I got a chance to talk to Matt Booth from Room 101 last week at an event. He believes we have about 3 years before anything serious would take effect from the FDA. But once in effect if it goes the way the FDA wants you will probably see the end of boutique cigar companies. They won't be able to survive it. They will either be bought out, sell in Countries other than the USA or go out of business.

An article from CA today said that General would keep the blends because they have rights, but release them under a different name because Sam obviously owns the Leccia brand name.

Exactly....those non compete clauses are a nightmare at best esp. when you already have a great product and you sign your rights away to some big corporation who have that big slutty smile on their face basically telling you that you just got swallowed up by the big slutty company and there isn't a thing you can do no matter what was promised.....it's just business they say.

I agree to an extent. What I think causes product quality to decrease when one of these large cigar companies (General and Altadis mainly) acquire a small brand is the strategy of cramming a new line in under that brand multiple times a year, not necessarily a cut in costs. It gets to a point where they make cigars just to make cigars, which, unfortunately, is a trend not exclusive to the big guys anymore.

If you're a small brand and you're struggling to keep up with production, struggling to keep the company profitable, or struggling to compete it makes perfect sense to sell. I don't know how Leccia was doing but it seems like a win for both Sam and General and if Sam goes on to do his own thing again after his time is up with General he will have more resources than we can imagine

I used to be a Corp raider in another life. Trust me the goal is to increase profits by reducing overhead. A non cigar finance person will say why do we need to age for a full year. If we drop to six months we add 5 million to the bottom line. Done.
