Stuff I used to get from my uncle in Virginia would take the enamel right off your teeth. Word to the wise...he eventually went blind from drinking his own shine.

The blindness is often caused by having a high concentration of methanol alcohol. Properly handled and distilled beverage should have very low amounts of methanol. I read a little about distilling and there's three parts to distillation collection. The head, the heart and the tail. You toss the head and tail and keep the heart. You can save the head and tail to distill again at a later date. That's where education and experience comes in, knowing when to start and stop collecting for aging/bottling.

Uncle Virgil just made the shine and then ummm exported it to the dry countys in Tennessee. Had an awesome car with a false trunk to hold the jugs. Reminded me of the Dukes of Hazzard.

That's pretty interesting as I had no clue you could go blind from shine. Bet he was a happy man going blind

I think I need to move to SC though because I want to have a small distillation setup. I have so many ideas and don't want to be beat out by the small batch producers that are popping up.

Irish moonshine has many names, The Craythur, Poteen, Poitin among many more depending what county you hail from.
Christy moore mentions the town I was born and raised in.
Guess it and you could win some Poteen.

Previous employment took me to N.E. Tennessee in the hills about once every 2 months. I can say good shine is hard to beat. Sure it is strong, but done right it is surprisingly smooth.

Most 'shine suffers from lack of aging. White lightning is just that: potent, strong, flammable, just to get drunk, and dangerous (methanol). Does anyone try to put it in a keg or jug with some charred sticks? Wait six months and see the taste? Use the carbon do do some fusil oil uptake?

Trying some time
