I like to torch the foot until its cherry red. Then I just smoke away. Seems to work the best for me.

Didn't see this posted so sorry if It's a duplicate.. but have you tried rotating your cigar as you're smoking? No expert but when I smoke I'm either constantly touching up the cigar or rotating to ensure its burning evenly.

noob q, whats the diff btwn toasting and charring? if i hold the stick to the flame until the foot turns red before taking the first puff or draw, is that heating it too hot?

The best thing is to ignite it slowly. As long as you do that it will be a great smoke.

Update. Enjoyed a stick the other day sitting in the sun, beer in hand. I took a good amount of time to light it. Started out with wooden matches but after about 6 got tired of striking. Moved to the POS bic style, but paid a lot of attention to flame distance and evenly toasting and getting a nice even cherry. Even outside in the wind it burned pretty damn well. Only one relight because I took too long. It was a gooder!
