OK, i"m in the market for a .223.

I've been lookin at ar-15s, M1s and a few different Bushmaster models.

There's this sweet bushmaster with a stainless barrel that's pretty f'in wicked. but at $1200, i have to pause to think.

Anyone have anysuggestions?

My goal is to shoot accurately at 300-400 yards using a good scope.

Barrel type? I don't want something that's gonna start walking on me when the barrel heats up.

I know a littel but not a lot about .223s, so give me all that knewledge i knowed you boys have

I hear you man...those ar-15s are AWESOME! Wifee gave the okay...but have to buy safe and save the loot myself for the 15. Hoping to get myself into one by this time next year.

Here were some of the sites I was looking at (but I am guessing you have seen them):
http://www.ar15-rifles.com/
http://www.ar15.com/ - Good forum for random info
http://www.ar15pro.com/

Hope this helps! I also have some friends that are really into this...so I will check with them and see if any of them might have or know someone who is have a "pay the bills sale". I have already heard of them selling off a lot of handguns for half going rate to make some money...times are tight.

AR15.com is your best resource. You have to wade through a TON of info, but it's all there.

Personally I believe Bushmaster is bordering on where Armalite and Colt are. You are paying mostly for the name. If you dig through AR15.com you'll find a bunch of other manufacturers that are held in very high regard, including RRA (Rock River Arms), which I highly recommend. Here's a good choice in a mid-length from them at less than $900.

The thing about AR15s is that there are about 1000 different setups. Great for customization, but difficult to get your head around when you first start looking.

Also, you want a 5.56, not a .223, just an FYI. Rifles chambered for 223 can't shoot 5.56, but 5.56 can take both. Better safe than sorry. Also, you'll find good surplus ammo in 5.56 (or at least you should be able to...at some point...).

If you want to stay simple and not get too engrossed in all the nitty gritty details, go out and find yourself a Smith and Wesson M&P 15 with the free float railed forend. When a buddy of mine picked one up they were very reasonable for everything you got with the rifle and the build quality was excellent. With the right scope and ammunition I don't see why you couldn't make it out to 3-400 yards with good accuracy.

I bought an ar15 colt h-bar match about 2 weeks ago. Paid $1200 for it at a local gun shop. Been to several gun shows since and the prices are above $1500 for the same rifle. The slope with these rifles is almost as slippery as the cigar slope. There are alot of different manufacturers for ammo in .223 or 5.56. Wolf out of Russia is probably the cheapest but the rifle will require extra cleaning after use. The surplus lake city ammo packaged by Federal is a cleaner round. As I said the slope is slippery but like cigars alot of fun.

Not an AR15 but a .223 NEF Handi-Rifle..... you can get one for WAY less than any AR.

AR's are cool, and I've been lusting after one myself. BUT, I'm a tightass, and don't wanna spend that kind of money. Even if I justify the rifle, I know the add=on goodies, and the 30rd mags are gonna make me pay......

If the barrel is a good quality, stainless target or varmint barrel, then the price is not out of line. I want to reiterate what Jason says about the 5.56 - you most definitely want a rifle chambered for 5.56 x 45 and not .223. There are substantial differences in the pressure curves between the two rounds. If you are willing to embrace another alternative and take the time to do the research, you could probably get a custom upper with White Oak barrel and an inexpensive, high quality lower for about the same price as the Bushmaster. This is nothing against Bushmaster and they make great products, but depending upon your accuracy needs the customized option might be worthwhile.

5.56 is the military specification and loads run at, IIRC - 55,000 psi, or thereabouts. .223 is a civilian SAAMI specifications and I believe the pressure maximum is 50,000 psi. Someone feel free to correct if I am wrong since I am doing this from memory. While a .223 may survive a 5.56 round most of the time in modern rifles, it is generally not a good practice to put 5.56 in a .223 rifle. Using .223 in a 5.56 is no problem.

I am very curious BBall, as to why you want/need such a rifle? My buddies here always get on me when I ask them this, if your suprised the army is comprised of more gun nuts than an NRA meeting, dont be. But I still cannot understand why you would want to spend that kind of money( 1200 friggin $!, and my buddy just ordered a pre banned M-14 for 1900!) on something that you get very little if any use out of?:scratchhe

Im all for having sweet toys Ive got lots including a harley and gsxr750, but i ride them often. Unless somebody actually has a useful outlet for a semi auto assault rifle (which other than the obvious proffesions, nothing comes to mind) let alone one thats accurate to 400 yards, with a 30 rd mag and free floating barrel. thats serious hardware.:riflefire. Then I just cannot understand the justification. This weapon in utterly usesless as a means of self defense, well i wont say useless, that would be a exageration. But it is not as suitable as some of its brethren. The rounds have very little stopping power, take this one from my proffesional experience, and if you live in an apartment or even just a regular neighborhood their is a very real threat of stray rounds endangering your neighbors.

Do not! get me confused for those hippies who think all guns should be banned, hell no! an armed nation is a safe nation. I think all adult upstanding citizens have every right to home defense and recreational weapons(hunting, skeet shooting etc). However I do think the weapons that were made for the law enforcement and military communites should be used for exactly that.

Anyway, thats my .02 I feel very strongly about it, and I am speaking up merely for good conversation. However if an assault rifle is whats for you than they are right about the 5.56 being the way to go, surplus ammo is very easy to come by, and will be even more so after the withdrawl in Iraq. Keep a close watch on online auctions for good deals in accesories. Gun shows are great for things like slings and mags, esspecially the military surplus type. Eitherway all my gun buddy tell me the window is closing the Obama gun laws are already beginning, so if your gonna buy dont wait to long, goodluck. Also I feel for you brother the economy is sucking bad anyluck on the job hunt, I wish the best for ya!

If I were you i would go with the AR15. Ive shot a few different models but the best one i think is the bushmaster. My cousin got deployed to Iraq for the second time and i looked after it. Lots of fun shooting. Plus for my cousin to say bushmaster is the best is sayin something, hes in the 2nd marine special operation battalion and knows the weapon inside and out

coppereagl - My reasons are quite simple. I'm skeptical as to where our nation and where the failing economy is gonna take us. The dismal options are endless. I'm a planner by nature. And I'd rather have this gun and not need it than need it and not have it. And if i have to defend myself, i'd rather start protecting at 400 yards rather than waiting til "whatever" is only 30 yards away.

And yes, I am of the opinion that Obama is gonna put major restrictions on gun purchasing. Most likely it will be in a way that we'll have to pass screening tests, pay for permits, carry $1MM insurance policies and so on so it will become wildly expensive to purchase a gun. I want mine before that happens. And if i ever decide to sell it, it'll go for a fortune and will have been a super wise investment with super high returns.

Plus, it makes me feel like a man!!!

Had a Colt AR15, flat top, four position collapsible. Nice gun, but if cartridge is what your after, get a rifle. It will reach out and touch you!

Gale I don't know how set on a Ar-15 type gun you are but if you check the thread I put up about the Steyr AUG I'm on the pre-order list. I've always wanted one but of course the parts and upgradeability isn't there like with a AR. I never really liked ARs though and I got to shoot them for a while.

Cool thing with an AUG is you can buy additional barrels and they easily swap out so you can go from 16" all the way to 24" in a snap. You can have a receiver with integrated optics or you can run your own optics on a rail. The thing I love about them is how compact the bullpup design is they're DAMN short overall.
