Cliff the Insurance Really is not that much at all.... I always told myself that when I graduate I will buy one...

But that all depends on the $$$ available....

Yea if you just get liability. But full coverage is a BITCH to get for a 21 y/o on a supersport bike  :headroll: So many guys drop it within the first couple months and then claim it on insurance and that drives the insurance up! :angryteet

yea that is why you get an older one to start out with so that if you drop it yea it matters but it is not that big of a deal...

Full coverage costs really depends on the bike.

The 99 GSXR I had cost more in insurance than the 2003 R6 that I had and the R6 had 110 HP compared to the 90-something on the GSXR. Also, the weight to hp ratio was about 1/2!

Likewise, the R1 is WAY more expensive than the CBR 1100XX ("Blackbird") yet the blackbird is one of the 3 or 4 fastest bikes made (top end is like 196mph).

A great all round bike with lots of torque and low cost for the bike and insurance is the Suzuki SV-650S. Great bike (had one of those as well).

Does it seem to be based on the value of the bike?
From what I have seen, it seems to be based more on the majority age group of the people who own the same bike and how likely the bike is to be stolen or wrecked - which would explain the price differences between the examples.

Young guys say "I want a GSXR1000 or an R1" without ever knowing how to PROPERLY ride a 250 or 500. They wreck them or another young punk steals it from them. (I can't tell you how many "squids" I have seen wreck their backs because they don't understand the basics of cornering, which is the most important part of riding a motorcycle IMHO - lots of geometry involved that one REALLY should understand).

Yea I know start with an older 250 or 500, but when I move up I'll have to bend over :ninja: It's just the age group I'm in is all. So I do agree with Mark that the price of insurance is mainly determined by age group and theft factor. i.e. My friend got a brand new Hayabusa last year and to insure it under his name as the primary driver, it would cost $13k a year. And that is more then the bike, hell he might as well wreck it and buy a bike every year. The same goes with the Ninja's, GSXR's, and CBR's. So now his dad is the primary driver and he's the secondary driver and I think it costs about $50 a month :eyequiver That's why I will wait

Yea well you forget I am in the same age group as you.... But it is as Mark said based on the average age of the population of riders on that particular bike...
