Mastercard blocking Tobacco Sales Online

Hey All-

Just wanted to let everyone know. As we came into work this morning we found out that our customers are no longer able to use Mastercard to purchase anything from us online. I know this was a possible issue in the past, and apparently its gone into action. I'm sure we're not the only business affected, another victory against cigar smokers by our ridiculous government.

This is completely unfair and un-American.

We are working to get around this and will help out our customers who do use MC, hopefully this won't stand up for too long?

Please post any info you may have or experiences with blocked purchases..

Yes. It is a MC driven initiative to stop use of the card for all tobacco related purchases.

VISA/MASTERCARD rules forbid the use of credit card for cigarette purchases. Cigars are excluded but the reference is vague. Each processing institution must decide how to handle the rule. It was your processing bank not MC that made the decision. Check with another credit card processor as yours decided to play it safe.

This was an issue off and on in 2004-05 as a couple card companies tried to do the same. I think it was AMEX & MC, but don't quote me on that The bull-crap block didn't last long. I recall some calling their bank as to allow exceptions.

Right, it's at the processor's level.. We may have to go to a new processor which trust me is a huge pain, being that tobacco sales falls into a high risk category. I think more and more processors will start to tighten up on this.. We also learned that by paying a yearly fee, they will allow it. Claiming that by charging a fee the CC Processing company is dissuading smaller tobacco companies from selling online.

Mastercard this morning has put a block on credit card transaction through online retailers that they deem to be in the "Adult Entertainment Industry". We currently are working with our Credit Card Processor to fix the issue as soon as possible. In the mean time we will not be able to accept Mastercard as payment until the issue is resolved. Well I'm glad I have VISA, but if I did have MC I sure as hell wouldn't have it much longer :angerFU:. I'm a grown adult, I work hard to make my money and I'll be damned if I'm gonna let my card issuer stop me from spending it how I want.
