All depends on the vendor. Though that is interesting. By all means, email the vendor to clarify their policy on inspecting.

They look ok to me, I would not introduce anymore water to them. Just brush them off and put the whole box in a baggie with a hydrometer to check humidity. If they arte too moist let them sit out of humi over night if your regional humidity is not high, if it is high you may keep them in the bag with some silia gel like what people use with their tool to keep from rusting.

I would not bother to contact vendor.

I was confused early on about mold or plume. Check out the following link:

http://home.alltel.net/jbperry/cig.htm

Those photos made it pretty clear which is which. I had some fuzzy (moldy) ones awhile back. Just wipe 'em off with a dry cloth and seperate them like the other fine brothers suggested and you should be fine. It worked for me! I would also let the vendor know as well. I hope this helps.

I would have expected him to say that. I've had a guy tell me that at a B&M when I went into his humidor and pointed it out to him. In fact he said, "The white stuff is plume, if it were green then it would be mold." I knew that he knew what it was, but was too embarassed that his cigars had mold to admit it. The mold was on his LG's and Tatuaje's which was a damn shame.

thats kinda what im thinking too. just doesnt want to admit it. but theyve been good to me in the past. ill just have to make sure i insist they inspect the boxes (all the boxes) in the future.

BTW. the cigars are looking good so far. of course its only been 3 days. ive checked them every morning before i head to work and its the first thing i do when i get home. im pretty sure that since i followed all the fine advice from the great bro's on this site, ill be (and my cigars) will be just fine.

To stray from the original post for a min, I hear a lot of people state the as long as the mold is not on the foot or inside the stick you are can wipe it off and you'll be fine. What happens if it is in the foot or inside the stick? Can you save it? Will it alter the taste? Could it be harmful to your health?

If it is in the foot then it is most likely inside the cigar and no, it really can't be saved. Basically, there is no way to "wipe it off" if it is in the foot. You could chop the foot off to try to save it I guess, but that's gonna change the taste to a certain dregree as well. I can't tell you if it will alter the taste as I've never smoked one that had mold in the foot and won't. That being said, general concenus is that it will most likely change the taste of the cigar and that there is just too much of a chance of a health hazard with inhaling mold spores from active live mold into your mouth.

To be quite honest, it is probably just being overly careful, but I'm just not willing to take that kind of risk, better to toss it and grab a different smoke if it's gotten that far.

Back to Kirscovitch and your issue: Sadly, your experience mirros probably 99% of everyone who has had this problem. If you wouldn't mind, PM me a hint as to who the vendor is...I'm really curious to find out if it is the same one I had this problem with. Same response, even though I sent very detailed pics of the obvious mold. He made good, but he still tried to say it was plume. I hate it, because it's dishonest and I hate that in a business, but I think that the majority of the people that these folks deal with probably fall for this standard refrain, which is why we always hear it.

OK, just caught up on the thread and I have 2 things.

Matt, if your vendor, especially a vendor of those cigars, is not willing to be honest about mold, or does not really know what plume is, I would not do business with them. There are some great vendors out there and for someone to flat out deny it from those pictures tells me something. I;m not you, but if I were, I would initially have been happy with an apology, but now would be seeking some type of discount on the next order. That's ridiculous from a vendor that should know better.

Texas, I had my Cammy Shark get mold in the foot. Wasn't about to toss it, so I took my Xikar and cut off the end. well, actually I had to cut the 4 corners and then the center, but I cut off the part with mold. I made sure that I looked very closely to see if any more mold was in there. That was about 5-6 months ago and I've had absolutely no problems since then. I'm going to save it for a little while to let it get some age on it, but I'll let you know how it smokes.

Jay, while I understand your sentiment, I think you would be surprised at how MANY of the common vendors do this. I know of at least two otherwise stand-up, every-day vendors that have used the old "your mold is plume" line. Not defending them in any way whatsoever, but if you gave up on every vendor that did it, you'd be narrowing down your list pretty darn quickly methinks.

Gentlemen, just my 50 cents worth (at my age I gotta get more than .02), most vendors will comment on plume vs mold, because most of us aren't sure what we're looking at (I hold this thread and all the others on this subject, up as evidence ). Ouite frankly in my case I've experienced a vast amount more plume than mold.
The easy fix is to use email, telephone, Western Union or smoke signals to communicate to the vendor your desires in advance. Have him inspect the purchase for you before shipping. As far as driving up the price for everyone else by returning something, we are already paying it. If the problem warrants it (major problem) I return the sticks. Slightly cracked feet, a little mold, whatever, I correct it and smoke em up. The last thing is develop a relationship with a couple of vendors and use then use em.
Yeah you might pay a couple of bucks more over a a discount vendors monthly specials price (who is having the more recent mold outbreaks by the way), however once that relationship has been developed you'd be suprised at what a vendor will do to keep you happy. Just keep the lines of communication open. He values relationships as well.
