Here's the gist of it...

The prelate pointed out that the pope was speaking in an academic setting, at the university where the pope had taught theology when he was professor Joseph Ratzinger, before working at the Vatican.

Bertone contended that Benedict was reflecting in general on the relationship between religion and violence and that the pope ended the speech with a "clear and radical rejection of the religious motivation for violence, from whatever side it may come."

Benedict had quoted from a book recounting a conversation between 14th century Byzantine Christian Emperor Manuel Paleologos II and an educated Persian on the truths of Christianity and Islam.

"The emperor comes to speak about the issue of jihad, holy war," the pope said.

"He said, I quote, 'Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached,"' he quoted the emperor as saying.

The grand sheik of Cairo's Al-Azhar Mosque, the Sunni Arab world's most powerful institution, condemned the pope's remarks as "reflecting ignorance."

The prime minister of Malaysia, with a large Muslim population, demanded that Benedict retract his remarks and not "take lightly the spread of outrage that has been created."

HOWEVER, while the muslims are outraged by this simple quote from a 14th century monarch, and want apologies, I find it odd that they're not willing to apologize for the 200+ cartoons they've created about the holocaust, nor are they willing to apologize for all the recent and countless deaths of innocent civilians they murder in terrorist bombings, all in the name of Islam...

I don't mean to be an as N8NOE, really, I don't, but what's your point?

Mitch, seriously, you DON'T see what there is to be upset about if you are Muslim (as others pointed out, you need to correct your title)???

I'm not in anyway saying the Pope's wrong, but I can very easily see why a Muslim would get pissed about this. I mean come on: "evil and inhuman".

Not something a Muslim wants to hear. And it's basically the biggest (living) religious figure in the world calling Muslims to the carpet regarding the constant refrain of "religion of peace." The moderates are going to be pissed because of that and the radicals will be pissed because true or not, even if it's what they believe (spreading the religion by the sword) it's someone expressing displeasure with Mohammed-big, huge no, no.

Yet Jesus gets criticized every single day for teaching faith through peace and no one rallies against the people doing that. But when the Pope quotes something out of a 600 year old book that happens to say something honest about Mohammed the Muslims cry out, riot in the streets and kill people???

Hm.

JW go up to any one of your coworkers and mention Jesus to them. See their reaction. The name of Jesus has become a curse word in the main stream. The name of Jesus makes more people uncomfortable than any other word in the English language.

Shawn, I understand what you are saying, but I've yet to hear someone criticize Jesus Christ or the teachings thereof.

You know...I'm very curious. At what point to the bulk of Islam, the what--9 Million or so members of Islam that make up true Islam (the religion of peace as we have been told a hundred times), step up and start making noise? Are we blinded? Are we missing it? Is it just not being reported? Because if not, at some point, doesn't the silence become as complicit as aiding and abbetting?

Look, I'm the eternal optimist. I'm the guy that wants to believe that the religion of peace, IS. And I understand that speaking out may be dangerous, but pretty soon NOT speaking out is going to become even more dangerous. The Muslim world community needs to start becoming extremely vocal in denouncing Radical Islam. Constantly and Consistently vocal. Because if not...at some point Radical Islam is going to push things too far. And all the restraint in the world, all the people who want to see the good in everyone will be worth nothing.

Either Islam is a religion of peace focused on the internal struggle of subjecting oneself to God (Allah), much like Christianity and Judaism...or it's a religion of the Sword. Unless the millions of true Islamics start speaking up, it will continue to be defined as the latter. And that only leads one place.

9 million? I believe the number is over one billion worldwide total Muslims. It is the second largest religion. Remember, those who live by the sword, die by the sword (JC), and radical muslims have chosen to live by the sword. They have already pushed things too far IMO, and there are but a few whose blinders have been lifted in order to see this.

Sorry, my math sucks this early in the morning. There should have been 2 zeroes after the 9. And really, it's more than that. I was trying to refer to the non-radical populatoin of Muslims which we are lead to believe is somewhere aroudn 99% (depending on who you listen to) of the worldwide population, making it somewhere between 990 Million and 1.29 Billion Muslims.

This is an awesome post. It brings up several good questions. If Islam is truely a religion of peace then why isn't the core of the Muslim nation in an uproar. If it's a religion of peace why are the real Muslims not stepping up and crushing these radical. At the very least why are they not speaking out against this violence?

It seems that recent events have done nothing but affirm the pope's message. The word's were not even the pope's own, but a quotation he was making to help define the history of strife between Christianity and Islam.
