I also sift through posts and stay away from topics that I don't feel I can contribute to. Yes the debate room can get a little heated but for the most part in a respectful manner, I repeat, for the most part. I also avoid threads started by a handful of members that I know I'll have issues with but what are the alternatives, certainly us calling them out would be counter productive. I've often wanted to post the off topic smiley but didn't want to be a dick.
That being said I don't think what's happening here is surprising considering the goings on in the country the past few years, after all online forums are just sub cultures and as such a direct reflection of our society as a whole. The tension created here is not unlike the same conflict, debate and political chest beating that the rest of the nation is experiencing.
