Welcome from WA!

As for the being able to taste a cigar. You are tasting it. So far all your able to ID is the burning tobacco and thats fine. Some people have a palate that can pick up every nuance, some don't. I personally fall in between closer to the tobacco side. Keep smoking and one day something will catch and you'll be able to relate a flavor to what you are smoking. It will blow your mind.
What you smoke and what you drink when smoking not to mention what you ate before you smoked or the condition of your body (if you're getting sick or are sick) all plays into it.
Retrohaling can help... its when you blow smoke out your nose and mouth. Look it up before you do it. The first time can be painful.

Right now Im smoking a stick that should be awesome and Im getting nothing more than a little bitter taste off the wrapper. Its disappointing. Last night I smoked a stick that was giving me a toasted marshmallow flavor.

Thanks for this, it's encouraging to hear that I'll be blown away eventually. Much appreciated brother, thanks for the welcome as well!

Welcome from Texas. Many of these Brothers have given you some spot on advice. This hobby/love/addiction takes time to fully appreciate. You are gonna smoke a lot of cigars before you actually find what you like and then one day that will change too. Smoking cigars is like evolution. Don't get caught up chasing flavors, sometimes you will pick one out and sometimes you won't. The most important thing is that you are enjoying what you smoke. Here's some reading material for you.

Welcome from down under Nick.

I'm pretty new also, probably smoked about 100 or so (never kept count) cigars and I still have a lot of trouble picking out the subtleties.

When they are obvious I can usually taste it through retro haling the last little bit. Might be worth a try!

The main thing is you enjoy each one! Numbers and flavor profiles are not as important as a nice relaxing smoke and an enjoyable time.

Take your time brother! The first step off the cliff is the most fun, as there are literally hundreds to try.

Check out the Todays Smoke thread under The Leaf>Cigars and the BoTL Noob Sampler thread if you want to be introduced to some great sticks. I went for this and was blown away by how much it broadened my horizons. Some damn fine people on this forum!
