I think the only failure here is the fact that now the tax payers are going to cover his cancer treatment, just like jwintosh said. I think a more effective punishment would be house arrest and a hefty fine. Then he's still punished, and he still has to cover his own treatment. I've got no mercy for someone who commits a violent crime, regardless of the sob story. And yes, I know it was just a BB gun, but that doesn't mean the people in the bank knew. Obviously, they never would have given him the money if they had reason to believe they weren't in any real danger, except maybe getting their eye shot out! :)
Me too!!

Got a better suggestion besides letting him go free?
I don't understand why there is a debate going on about this post. The man in question couldn't cope with his circumstances and acted out in a manner in which earned him an extended stay in prison. This was his goal was it not? If it so happens the man has a history of mental illness or some sort of disorder or injury that may have clouded his judgment, that is a different story all together but this seems to be an open and shut case to me.

Nor do I. The guy should be punished in accordance with the law. He played the system, yeah, but we need to punish him as we should any other criminal who committed this crime.

Or.. just do what icehog suggested and remove the problem entirely.

So why should we reward him by giving him what he wanted?

had a fun case a few years back... we tend to let the drunks sleep it off in the drunk tank at central jail. there is no criminal complaint. they get no food. and are released when sober.

this one man wanted food. too bad. you have to stay the night to get fed. we kick him out the back door. he walks across the street and throws a huge cinder block thru the law library window. he got fed.

Lol I work a beat that has the county hospital and the psych ward. Always get the people who say the magic phrase so we have to take them on a 72hr hold so they get a place to shower, eat, and sleep. When its real cold business goes up.
