No, No, No.... :nono: Heat moves from Hot to Cold... PERIOD. :stickbeat It is hot air that rises. Its a small but very important distinction. Sorry, pet peeve, off soapbox. :peace:
That may be true, but the general consensus is that holding the slower-burning side DOWN is correct... and it's certainly borne out in my experience.

Ok, here's the first update. I left the digital hygro in a baggie walong with a 69% Boveda pack from a bomb. After 12 hours, it toped out around 64%, so I adjusted it up, and now it reads 68-69% after 12 hours with the Boveda. So I put it back in my humidor with no other change, and well see where it's at. It was reading mid 60s before cal, so it may actually read 70, but we'll see. I'll also check it against a Drymistat to see what it's actually putting out. When I initially caled it, it was within a day of putting water into the drymistat, so it may not have been a bit over initially.

After I got the bomb, the humidity droped to 60, so it was probably really 65. We'll see.

My last cigar I left out for an hour. (CAO 'VR' Moby 6x50) I did notice there was a crack in the wrapper at about the halfway point. It was about 3/4" long, and diagonal along the cigar.

This cigar I lit as usual, but gave it a little extra flame after the first puff just to make sure I had a good ring all around. This one has a near perfect burn all the way down to the last inch! No touch ups, nada.

One other difference is there was a light breeze this time, and I was sitting into the wind, and when I was holding the cigar, it was pointed into the wind. So I don't know if that would theoretically help the burn or hinder it.

So, so far so good. I'll try leaving each cigar I smoke out for an hour or so before smoking. I'll also report back on new humidor numbers and findings.

The OC
wind is known for causing burn problems. I think the hour in the dry air, and making sure the entire wrapper was lit before puffing is what helped. and it sounds like you may have been storing in a high RH which is for sure a major cause of burn issues.

Sure, but I think most important in this case is how the combustion reaction moves through the material.

The two arguments I've heard are "Fire burns up, turn the slow side to the top" and "Smoke at the top retards combustion, while the fresh air at the bottom fuels it, keep the slow side on the bottom."

I don't know who to believe... :dunno:

Take this to the bank: Slow Side Down -UNLESS- smoking outside and it is windy, then Top Side Up.

After smoking some 30,000+ plus cigars over the years I know this to be a fact.

Now, if the bunch was booked it will not matter how you spin the cigar, the booked side will always burn slower.

Also, given the plethora of cigars with so much heavy viso and ligero in them these days the problem is compounded. If the ligero is just a touch off center it can cause this problem too.

And larger ring gauges are far more susceptible to these issues - the very same cigar in 48 or less will almost universally burn better than those larger - get into 54 plus and even the slightest of bunching flaws compound.

As for the discussion of rotating in the humidor, I don't put much merit in that unless the cigars are literally up against the humidifying element and demonstratively wet on one side.

That is my $0.02 fwiw...
