Hello all,

I went a little overboard with a purchase recently and have a question. I made my purchase based on a recommendation more that experience. Ramone Allones Specially Selected, Trinidad Reyes and Partagas Shorts.

It was my understanding that they all smoke nicely even if a little young, is this correct? How long should I age them? I ask that because I smoked an H. Upmann that was aged too long recently. I've smoked others that were aged too little and too much and its not always pleasent. So to avoid wasting cigars I was hoping for help.

Of the 3 you listed I've only had the RASS. My box smoked well from day 1. Now they are 2 years old and are smoking great as well.

They were both a few years old. I was warned by a friend that if these particular cigars age too much they lose the nice flavors. I'm not too experienced with Upmanns so I don't know.

I gotcha. I've never heard them tasting grassy but a year can make all the difference so to say "a few years old" when trying to figure out what too much age could be and when they may have started a downturn doesn't help.

I've never really heard of a habano getting worse with age, remember that the aging isn't going to change the taste much, its more of a mellowing of the flavors. So if you smoke a fresh habano and don't care for it, i doubt that a few years of aging is going to improve the taste for you. I happen to love the mag 46 and have a couple boxes aging now. I cant wait to see what they are like 5+ years out.

Just smoke them every once and a while until theyre ready. And if theyre ready right out of the box then just enjoy them now
That's the best and most direct to the point answer. Taste is subjective so we can't tell you when they're ready for you. Some people love fresh Partagas. I don't. It's all about what tastes good to you. In regards to your Upmann's being 3 and 4 years old... no way they are too old to smoke. You probably just don't enjoy that profile, or at least at that point in time. I'm not a big fan of the Mag's, but the No.2's can have many years of humidor time and can be an amazing cigar.

If you are new to CC's coming from a NC world, my guess is that you just prefer the bolder flavors of a NC right now. Over time, your palate will either get used to the more complex/subtle flavors of CC's, or you'll continue to prefer NC's. I used to love and prefer the NC CT Broadleaf flavor bombs, now I prefer the more subtle CC.

I really love a nice strong kick and a change in flavors is always nice to me, so I can see where he thought a aged cigar was one dimensional and plain. I just got some ryj cazadores based on how they were described young, and if they smoke and taste like what I heard they will all burn before they are 2 years old.

Those should all smoke well fresh, but the Reyes might need a little bit of time to be spot on. Recent RASS are good to go and most people like their party shorts fresh.

The RASS are terrific! The Partagas Shorts are too and the Reyes do need a little time. I also got San Cristobal El Principe which have yet to arrive.

IMO, all cigars are rolled to be smoked right out of the box. Not saying that they won't be better with some age, but not a single marca says to buy now but smoke in a few years.

Try one of each right out of the box and I'm sure you'd like all of them as they are great choices. If you have one that tastes "not to your liking," try another one down the line. Maybe you just had a bad stick out of the bunch.

Aging is just more for your experiment, to see how the cigar changes over time. No marca says you need to do it to enjoy their sticks. If they taste good young, then smoke 'em young. If you want to, experiment, then give it some time.

"It was my understanding that they all smoke nicely even if a little young, is this correct? " Incorrect........varies by box, year, storage,ETC.

" How long should I age them?" until they are ready to smoke........you will know by trying one occasionally.

"I ask that because I smoked an H. Upmann that was aged too long recently."Unlikely, and without an age statement, shows a total lack of understanding.Maybe if it was 50 years old it would be diminishing, but still it would be a rare experience.Aged too long?perhaps aged poorly,or not even real...........

" I've smoked others that were aged too little and too much and its not always pleasent".How do you know this? Same source ,are they real, were they properly kept?

"So to avoid wasting cigars I was hoping for help"...How else can you learn,if you do not experience it for yourself? Is that a waste of cigars? How much do you value knowledge?
If you ask others for advise you will never experience learning,in fact you may be led in the wrong direction.Get a book and read, smoke some cigars, and grow........
