Anybody on here have a paper route?

Something yesterday made me think of it.
When I was in junior high I had a job delivering the Cincinnati Post.
But what I did was ride around in the back of Bill's truck and he would pull up to a rack and I would jump off the truck and put the papers in the machine.
I really enjoyed that job.

When I was about 19 I had a home delivery route, but it was on where I drive around in a couple of neighborhoods and threw them out of the car.
I loved that job. So much so that I wound up having a New York Times route
Monday thru Friday , It came out at about 2 in the morning. And then doing the Post from about 3 till 5 in the afternoon.

I dropped the times since it paid very little and got an Enquirer route,
Had to put it in my cousin;s name because they would not let you have a Post route and an Enquirer route. But the enquirer is 7 days a week no day off job. Even if it is only for a couple of hours in the early morning, not something a 20 year old wants to do.

And in the middle of my day I worked at domino's pizza...but that is another story :starrylov :togetherl (that is how I met my soon to be wife)

Got burnt out throwin' papers so I responded to a classified ad for sales at an electronics company in Cincinnati and I have been in sales ever since.
It's not the noun...it's the verb.

I have not yet.

The schedlue has been horrible as of late. But this summer I am going to make it a point. I am sure I can find some way to get up there and visit a few relatives or buy something for the lot.

Is it on a Tuesday?

My family had some hard times in the mid-70's so my mother took over two paper routes from some guys I went to school with. Guess who did most of the work? We delivered the Chester County Press in Oxford PA. She drove her station wagon and I ran the papers to peoples doors. Whatever money we made went towards groceries and such. The only money I ever saw myself was the occasional small tip. It was a good time though cruising the nieghborhoods with Mom. I used to get a kick out of how some folks would hide in their house on collection day. You'd see the curtains move but nobody would come to the door!

My route Started on the edge of Downtown , near the jail and went into Walnut Hills. (that was not a good neighborhood) Thru Eden Park and Into Mt. Adams. (great neighborhood) I also had 1 Lytle Place on my route.
That is the tall building next to what was Riverfront coliseum.

The Bad part had a bunch of old people that had been getting the paper for years and after I worked on it they paid great but I did not tell my supervisor that.

The way the paper charged me for the papers was based on the expected collection rate. Bad route equals big discount for me. Good collections meant I would have to pay more for my papers. Piss on that.
The good part wanted to pay 3 months at a time, 3 months after they got the paper, not in advance. The bad part paid on the 3rd or 4th of each month like clockwork.

The old ladies after they got to know me, would make me something to drink or give me cookies. It was an enjoyable job and I made great money at it and had a lot of freedom. I had to pay the Post for the papers and it was my resposibility to collect from my clients.

Learned how to pitch quarters from the doorman at Highland towers in Mt.Adams on Saturday Mornings.
That was my dream place to live back then. A beautiful view of the river and downtown. Upscale building with lots of high profile people.
Marvin Warner lived on the top floor.

Had one. Mostly delivered by bike, but now and then had my Grandmother drive me around in her big ol' Buick.

Barely above the waterline.
I had two at the same tome, in high school. An early morning route for the Statesman, then off to school, then an afternoon route for the Free Press.

All delivered with my bike. It was easier and faster than my car.

Good business experience. Gave me lots of money for dates, ammo, and gas.

Never had a problem collecting. If they ducked payment, I stopped delivering. Both of my bosses knew this. If they called to complain about delivery, and were on my route, he told them to pay, and delivery would resume. They did. No problem.

I even won some good prizes for selling subscriptions on my routes. And those paper routes helped me get some better jobs later on.

Thanks for bringing this up. I haven't thought of those times in years.............

My only paper route was when I was in 5th-6th grade in Dallas, Tx. Delivered over 100+ customers in a large apartment complex. Did not make much money though as I had to do the monthly collections as well as deliver ... and some folks put the paper bill on the bottom in the importance column. :argh:

There were a couple of nice perks though. There were a couple members of the Dallas Cowboys living there (mostly rookies) and I got some autographs. There was also a group of 4 airline stewardesses sharing one apartment and they always invited me in for some snatch ... errrr, I mean some snacks whenever they were home.
(I remember lots of vivid daydreams back then ... :jitb: )

Yup, delivered NT Times in the morning and worked in a 5 & 10 store after school.

Pop always wanted me to have a job. Did not matter what it was or what it paid. As long as I had a job - I could borrow money from him - extend the curfew - but only while employed. One of those life's lessons.

I had a small one in Riverside Ca, for the Press Enterprise. Only had about 74 customers but on Sundays it was a bitch. My sister had one also.

We hatched a plan and conned our father to wake up at 5:00 am every Sunday and drive the car along both our paper routes while we rode along on skateboards.

Somewhere in the bargain with Pop, we were supposed to pay him for his time, but I can't ever remember handing him any cash. Although he did stop handing us money whenever we wanted a new bike or game for my commodore 64.....

I had one for several years. I have sooo many stories from that route...everything from neked women to people stealing papers to me waking up in the middle of someone dew filled yard after I fell asleep while walking the route. Oh the good ole days.

Same here but my grandma had a '74 Nova with a 350 that flat-out screamed! I paid for half of my brand new 10 speed with that paper route. Then a few years later it got stolen in front of her house.

:tongueout
