Do you prefer semi or pump?
Are there certain loads you want to run?
Will you do anything with it besides RV protection (and the bear trip)?
What kind of sights do you want?
How short of a barrel? Do you plan on turning it into an SBS?

Or the core two questions:
What's your price range?
What do you want to do with it?
Honestly-no experience with them, so no real preference on a lot of things.

I only intend to have it around for the RV. As rarely as I go to the range and such, I doubt it sees much use at all. I probably don't even need to be spending money right now, and might not get one, but it's a possibility.

Price range-as cheap as possible. I'd like to keep things in the 200-300 range if thats even possible. If it gets much more than that, than I probably can't get one. The girlfriend is taking a new job, and we just took a massive pay cut because of it. I have to learn to deal with that b word. fuck budgets.

Remington 870
Mossberg 500
Winchester 1300

There's also companies who make guns very similar to those. Most can be had cheap new, and even cheaper used.

If youre right handed, go find a good, used Remington 870P (police model).. they are reasonably cheap.. rugged as hell.. and reliable as a pump gun can get..

If youre a lefty.. consider the mossy 500 or 590.. the trigger guard safety on the remington can be a bit of a pain in the backside for a lefty (easy to overcome with some training.. but still not nearly as easy to use for a lefty as a righty...)... the mossy guns have a ambi safety mounted on the rear of the reciever that is easier to access for a lefty...

I prefer a 590 over a 500.. its a better built gun.. will take more abuse.. is more reliable.. etc.. (I put it on par with the 870).. but the 500 will certainly get the job done.. and will do it more affordably than the 590..

My personal "home defense" shotgun is a 590 tactical.. with a speedfeed stock and a side saddle (18 total rounds on the gun).. with ghost ring sights.. and a surefire forend.... total package new was less than $800 (bought it a long time ago though.. I have no idea what market price is for a new one now..)...

I see used, older model 870P's going for about $300 fairly regularly..

you can pick up a 500 for less than $300 all day long.. I occasionally see them in the $200 range..

a basic 590 used is probably going to be in the $300 range as well...

on the pistol grip thing....

DONT DO IT...

I would consider a stock/grip combo set up.. but in most cases the ergodynamics of a pistol grip adds significantly more felt recoil.. and does little to add to accuracy or speed..

a shotgun with a pistol grip only is worthless...

shotguns need stocks..
If I didn't like you so much brother id say stand in a typical homes hallway and give me a pistol grip with 00 or 9 shot and ill show u it's not worthless at all. Everything else you said ADDS more capability but a pistol grip pump at home defense range is far from worthless. But I like u so I didn't say it. Lol

I should rephrase lol...

A brick is a weapon... For home defense there are far better options though... Like a pistol grip shotgun :)

A pistol grip shotgun is a weapon... For home defense there are far better options.. Like a shotgun with a stock :)

The only scenario I have found where a pistol grip is preferred (and this doesn't apply 100%) is on a dedicated breaching shotgun...

A better way to look at this is...

DevGru, CAG, and 22 SAS are arguably 3 of the best counter terrorist teams in the world... All of them have tons of FISHing experience (Fighting In Someone's House)... All of them have shotguns in their inventories.. But none of them use pistol grip shotguns for anything except breaching...

Why?

When you need a shotgun to do the job.. A pistol grip variant is almost always the poorest solution...

Same thing with major metro area SWAT teams... (Again, specialists in FISHing)... No pistol grip shotguns...
