I carry a Beretta 92fs in stainless and a Kel-tec PF9 and they are both great guns. The pf9 is tiny and conceals easily even in gym shorts. The Beretta is just awesome and is very accurate.

So I went to the range and shot 3 different .40 cals. I have so many people tell me to go .40 instead of 9mm that I have decided to heed the advice. The only pistol I have left to shoot now before I finalize my choice is the Sig P226. This trip to the range I shot a Glock23, and XD, and a H&K USP.

They were all nice guns but after putting about 50 rounds through the glock, I just don't think that ones for me. I really liked the XD a lot but man that H&K is in a class of its own. I like that gun. I know it isn't in the same price range as the other two as it costs about twice as much as either the Glock or XD. The only reason I even shot it was that my buddy who I went shooting with is a big H&K guy and he brought the USP for me to try. Now I'm wishing I didn't take him up on it. Besides the H&K I really did like the XD a lot. It was comfortable in my hand, and I liked the trigger pull and found the recoil to be very manageable, more so than the Glock.

So I need to find a place with a Sig P226 to rent and I have plenty to think about. Here are some pics of my test at the range. These are just my initial tries with the guns. I shot a bunch more with each in an effort to get a feel for them. These initial results pretty much sum up my overall experience with each gun.

These were at about 7 to 8 yards and all three guns were .40 S&W. Don't rip on me too hard, after all I am not exactly what you'd call an experienced handgun shooter...

First the two tries with the Glock23.

These are the XD...

and Finally the HK. Boy did I like this gun.

love the glock! hate the 9mm. too hot. tends to hit what's behind the target too!! go for the .40 caliber. glock 23.
I have a glock for backup, I dont like it for primary weapon, but I am just not a glock guy. Agreed with above go .40. Go look at balistics data on the 9mm and you will see why it is a very poor round. That said I still say go .45. this way you can do the job once and get it right.

As for the 226, you may like the 229 more. I have a .40 in 229 as my dept issued side arm. I like it more than the 226 which I owned for many years. 12+1 and it can do the 357 barrel swap when you want to play. OO and agreed on the H&K they make fine weapons and I do like the way they shoot. That said I think you are doing yourself an injustice if you dont go find yourself a 1911 to shoot. Or one of the many similar model single stack .45s out there. Out of every gun I have shot, this is the hands down winner. Just a fantastic shooting gun.

It dosen't suprise me that you fired the HK the best. I have a couple of HK's and shoot them much better than my Glock 23. About the same weight and probably just as durable/reliable. Never had a failure at the range with them.

As mentioned try out a 9mm 1911. There is nothing nicer to shoot than a 1911 with a sweet trigger.:blushlove

Glock 19 with Tricon night sights...its better than any sig sauer I have owned
Assuming that the Glock is ergonomic for him.
For me the Glock barrel always "points high " and I have to adjust, unlike with a Sig or any other semi for that matter.

Also, with any polymer framed pistol the user cannot " limp wrist it" or he/she will endure the issue stovepiping.

Just another point of view friend.

a beautiful gun to fire is the Browning HP 9mm or .40 cal. 10 rounds single stack magazine full metal frame so it's nicer to shoot with at the range but it's a slim design so really easy to carry. Canadian Forces standard issue pistol for a reason. The popular one to get is the chrome or nickle plated look with wood grips, classic style but you can get it blued or flat black with any grips out there really.

It is down to the Sig 226 and the H&K USP for me. I have shot a bunch of guns the past couple months and these two were the ones I liked best far and away. I am having a hard time choosing between the two. In terms of firing them on the range I cannot come up with any differentiating factors to separate one form the other. I loved them both. SO I will have to come up with something else to tip the scales. My wife lost her job back in November so I cannot in good conscious run out and buy a pistol even though I have the money. As soon as she lands a new job though, I will be making a purchase. I have until then to mull it all over in my head.

Sorry to hear about your wife losing her job. But it's good to hear that you know know what you want. I would say that HK and Sig are the best Uber pistols out there.

Still if you get the chance? Give a 1911 a try.

It took a long time but I finally got it....

So here it is. My used but new to me H&K USP .40 with factory Night sights. I haven't shot it yet. Hope to get to that this weekend if there is time, but it might be another week or so before I can get to the range. Got a really good deal on it at the gun show this past weekend. It apparently was a LE trade in so there is some wear and cosmetic flaws on the frame but otherwise it is in really nice shape.

 Congrats on your purchase.

I have a full size USP in .40 S&W and it's the most accurate DA pistol I've fired. I shot my friends Compact USP .40 and it was very accurate as well. I don't think you will be disapointed with it.

HK USP's are as durable as any pistol out there.

Let us know how it perfomes at the range.

The only gun I ever owned was a walther p9 9mm? I could hit whatever I wanted with it and never had a problem. Sold it cuz I couldn't figure out a reason to keep it.

45 slugs aren't that expensive, then again I guess that depends on your budget. If you like the glock series and you want to conceal a low profile high caliber pistol try the glock 30 .45 acp. Gets the job done not too big and packs a big punch!

One of my favorite pistol manufacturer is SIG SAUER. On target right out of the box and reliable to a fault.
If you prefer a heavy weapon a sig elite should do the trick. The one I enjoy shooting is the .45 p220 elite carry. It has a shorter barrel 3.9" and is beautifull.
