How would I be able to get my hands on one if I can't travel. I've heard alot of good things about real Cuban cigars but never had one. What would be the next best thing in comparison?
Thanks!

You don't need to travel to acquire a pre-embargo, but they are hard to find & expensive if they are legit. You can easily find Clear-havanas (partial cuban) or bonded-havanas (puros) at Gotham-cigars that are waaay pre-embargo, but these too are a gamble: some taste great, some don't (if you ask me, they are well worth it though).

Don't believe the hype about cubans, or at least take it with a grain of salt: the construction and quality is IMO far superior in sticks coming out of Nicaragua & Dominican Republic. However - each country produces leaf that has a particular taste about it that really can't be reproduced anywhere else - if you favor the cuban twang, nothing but a cuban cigar will ever compare. (I appreciate the qualities & differences coming from many different countries).

Eventually I'm sure you'll try one, but check your expectations so when you light up, you are pleasantly surprised instead of sorely dissapointed.

I don't think there's a single inaccurate statement in the above post. Perhaps the only thing I would clarify would be to say that everyone needs to develop their OWN opinion about Cubans instead of just saying "don't believe the hype". Don't think they're infinitely better just because someone else says they are. If you're wanting to take the risk, formulate your own opinion, don't take one from elsewhere.

Very nice post.

Another GREAT point on the subject. I smoked my first few CC's expecting to be blown away and was very dissapointed. I think being open minded and having low expectations for EVERY new cigar is a great idea.

once you have tried a few, you will no doubt find that they are like all other cigars. there will be brands that you favor and others that will leave you flat. in my younger days, the mystique led me to believe that ALL cuban cigars were great. even an average one was better than anything that we had access to. now perhaps 20 years ago that may have been true, i dont' know. but now, each area/country turns out some really good product. i always smile when i see a post about "what cigar can you get that tastes most like a cuban?". well, let's see. would that be a partagas, or a cohiba or a vr or...... because they all taste different. and no, nothing else is going to taste like them.
just hang around long enough and you'll end up getting to try lots of different sticks and then decide what you like by the flavor you like, not by brand or country.

My first Cuban was a Jose Piedra corona. I smoked it relatively early in my cigar days and I was blown away, even though they were mass produced machine made cigars (thats what I heard, is it true?). However, now that I have experienced more cigars, I wish to go back and try one again, but I am unsure of where to procure them

Correct, they're machine made...but admittedly, they're decent considering they're machine made. I'd certainly smoke one anytime, and they're quite cheap, but they're not a premium cigar (whatever that means).
