Rocky & Gurkha Does Anyone Like Them?

Love the RP Edge Missile Maduro. Also like the Decade,ITC 10th,Summer and Winter.
I used to be quite the RP fan back in 05 when the OB edge missile maduro and sun grown were out. The labels are the same, but the current blends bear no resemblance to the originals. I'm sure my palate has changed, but I think Rocky lacks the ability to blend consistently like the masters.

I agree with NJStone on this one. Not everyone can afford to smoke premium smokes everyday. And on top of that, I think that both brands get demonized because of a few bad blends. But much like many other manufacturers, you have to weed out the bad and find the sticks you like.
I like a few of the RP lines, but not too many. Of the two Gurkha lines Ive had, I really enjoyed them both (Legend, Nepalese warrior). Keep in mind also that I dont necessarily always like full bodied, spicy, burn my nose hairs cigars. Most of the time
I like a medium bodied, well balanced, not over powering, flavorful stick and quite honestly, both Gurkhas Ive had fall in to that category, In my opinion.
I think too many people get caught up in to name brands and whats popular. Smoke what you like.

Yep. Had a coffin of the original Edge. 100 cigars. Smoked everyone of them. I have smoked boxes and boxes of Gurkha Masters Select and Legends. I have 20 or 30 Centurians left that I still smoke on occasion. Lovely cigar. It is hard now as there are soooo many sticks. I just kinda got away from both lines.
I've tried several RP blends, but haven't found one that I consider a keeper. Each one that I've purchased has been a disappointment.
On the other hand, I absolutely love the Gurkha Class Regent. It's an unusual "flat" box press.... much flatter than a typical box press. The flavor and aroma are amazing.

Try the Nepalese Warrior--Cameroon version of the same cigar ... great stick!
So I've heard. I'll have to give them a try if I catch 'em on sale. Have you had any experience with the Sherpa or Sherpa Cafe' blends?

The Patel Bros and Edge Corojo are both good IMHO. I like the legend, blue steel and royal brigade from Gurkha. I don't like most other Gurkhas much..., all kind of taste alike to me. I agree they both make too many mediocre blends... Less hype better cigars seems like a better idea to me....
Im actually a pretty big fan of gurka just because there smokes were among the first smokes i tried.. They are all average smokes to me so far (the ones ive tried) but i never have problems with them either.. I also smoked a pretty good rocky patel the other day.. i cant point out exactly what Patel it was but it was fairly small with red labels... Great smoke.. so yeah to answer ur question Im a big fan of Gurkha and a fan of one rp stick
I've been gifted 2 RP's. One was a Cuban Blend Lancero (natural) that I couldn't find anything wrong with. I didn't think it was the worst stick I ever smoked. I'm probably gonna try the 1961 in a few hours, or sometime tomorrow afternoon.
For me the equalizer is just tasting blind (gf usually does this with all my cigars - "pick one and bring it out to me" unbanded, or paper taped if it's tight/sticky). If it fares well, then I get more.
This of course does break the template of 3 tries on a cigar, but you make concessions based on your current circumstances. There is no way a new smoker can try every single line available on a reasonable budget. My method is working well for me. I also have a Gurkha that hasn't come out yet.
Not meaning to thread jack but how many of you do this every so often, or always? Blind tasting?
It keeps me on my toes, not knowing if my next stick will be a past favorite, a new cigar with amazing reviews, or the 2.00$ stick from the CI sampler.
Edit: Finished the 1961. 0-2 on RP follow up purchase worthy sticks for me.

RP Sungrown, Vintage 90 are good stix. As for Gurkha I have had a few and I cant say any of them were that great. But then again there is so many of them maybe I could find one that I like if I spent the next 3 months trying to smoke each one of there stix.
Also it seems that I usually try stix on recomendation from other BOTL so when there not smoking them I guess I'm not really going to try random mostly expensive stix that Gurkha has to offer.
With Rocky Patel I have met him a few times and it seems like when I am at the events I will always try what he has that is new. He is always talking it up and getting you jazzed on his new product.

That goes a long way for me. If you want me to smoke your stuff spend the time to talk it up. Don't sit in a chair and be watching T.V. I have never seen any other rep do that.
