BOTL, this is my first post to the forum. I'm a 'new' frequent smoker, but have smoked cigars infrequently (maybe 6 or so sticks a year) over the past three years. My new 100 count humidor has been stocked 3/4 full with samplers and 5 packs of all vitolas from the devil site, and I'm slowly making my way through them to see what I like after doing A LOT of reading on this site to educate myself.

Today I had the Rocky Patel Decade Torpedo. I lit it with a torch but couldn't see any red 'embers' from the foot when lighting it. The first half of the cigar was delicious and nutty, but the burn wasn't razor sharp. Half way through, the burn slowed and eventually stopped. I thought this was somewhat odd since I wasn't smoking it that slowly (puff or so every minute). I re-lit it, but it went out again after another quarter way through. The same thing happened during the last quarter, and I had to touch it up 3 times to keep it going. Near the nub I decided to take it apart, and it appeared that the filler was moist and dark in color.

Has anyone had this problem before, or could this cigar have been a dud or over humidified? I've had it in my humidor for about a month, and haven't had any other burn issues with cigars pulled from my box.

Also, any recommendations along the lines of the Decade? I really enjoyed the Sabor Cubano Maduro (6x52), but have disliked the Perdomo 10th Anniv. Champagne Robusto and CAO L’Anniversaire Cameroon Robusto. I guess my tastes are along the lines of average strength, richer, nuttier flavors, and medium-full body.

Thanks, gents!

Welcome Brian, first off head over to the introductions forum and tell us about yourself. And I have never been a fan of the decades, alot of RP have burn issues in my opinion.

i'm a big fan of the decades. and hey, welcome to the board

oh, and i'm gonna make a stab in the dark and guess that the cigar was too moist. no other reason i can think of for it to go out midway through.

Ha, as someone I know, it sounds like you aren't storing them right. :)

Thanks guys. I don't think the storage on my end was the problem (humi holds steady around 68%), but perhaps it was over humidified coming from Cbid. Anyway, this was my only RP stick, and I want to give it another try but may hold off based on all the comments above. I feel that I should work my way through the Padron 64s before giving another RP a try. Any other suggestions are welcome!

Different smokes for different folks brothers. The wonderful thing about cigars is that there is 1400 brands worldwide. So waht I may like, someone else may not. Try them all!

Interesting that most here don't like RPs. Is it because of the flavor/body or construction?
ill agree that they have gone down in quality over the last couple years...ive only been smoking for a little over a year tho and i cant see a noticeable diff. theyre are some minor things that have changed in the last year, but i still think they are good smokes

If you want to try some more RP's, PM me your addy and ill send ya a few :tiphat:

What up Brian!? Welcome! I enjoy Rocky's Vintage 92 and occasionally his Connecticut's. Usually the construction is good. Out of all the Vintages I have smoked I have only had one that was plugged. I feel that RP should focus on perfecting the blends that he already has instead of coming out with new smokes every two week. Like Darkman said try Padron. IMHO the best maduro you can get. The anniversary's can be a little pricy but the thousand series are a lot more affordable and just as enjoyable.

Haven't had any similar issues with the few RPs I've smoked. Give the Olde World Reserve a shot.

Yea I would say a storage issue. That's a decent smoke and I've never had issues like that. Also let your cigar dry rest if it feels spongy. you can let it rest for a day and it would be fine. Just keep it in a somewhat cool area out of the sun.

Welcome to BOTL!! I bought a box of RP Decade Torpedo's 2 years ago when they were released after having a pre-release Toro. The Torpedo was not as good to me, at the time. I just happened to smoke one of those sticks last week and it was much better than I remember. They seem to be worth the $10 now. The Padron 64 line is a much better choice, but more expensive.

Has anyone had this problem before, or could this cigar have been a dude or over humidified? I've had it in my humidor for about a month, and haven't had any other burn issues with cigars pulled from my box.
Putting dudes in your mouth and pulling cigars from your box, you sure your name is Brian? You remind me of a chick named Monica.

Kidding aside it does sound like a storage issue like some have stated. How was the draw pre-light?
