As some of you have already experienced smoking bans, and might know that the State of Texas is considering one at the moment. I just looked at its progression of HB 9 and found out that it was put on the intent calendar today for a senate vote. This only means it is a matter of time before the senate approves the vote and we have a smoking ban state wide. I'm not too sure of all the details involved, I haven't had the time to actually read the bill, but it made me a little depressed. Just thought I'd let you know and if you live in TX please email your senator.

Nothing in government is certain ... and people who oppose these idiotic bills need to let their representatives know BEFORE they get a chance to vote. Spread the word down in Texas and show them you believe in private propery rights. The sad day in Texas will be when real cowboys take this shit lying down.

House passes smoking ban bill
Smoking Ban
Tuesday, May 08, 2007 at 3:19 PM

"AUSTIN (AP) - The Texas House today gave final approval to a weakened statewide ban on smoking in bars and restaurant.

But loopholes that still allow patrons to light up -- leave the bill's future in doubt.

Supporters say the bill is needed to protect workers and customers from potentially deadly second-hand smoke.

But opponents say the measure would violate private property rights, is bad for business -- and is just plain mean to smokers.

The House amended the ban to allow business property owners to decide if smoking will be allowed. The owner would have to post a sign in a conspicuous place noting that smoking is permitted.

Texas Senate leadership has suggested the bill will be dead on arrival in the chamber.

Seventeen states, including California and New York, have comprehensive smoking bans.

Houston, Austin, El Paso are among the Texas cities with such bans.

The smoking ban bill is HB9. "

Damn government! You know there are a ton of studies out there that disprove the effects of second hand smoke. It seems that the only time that its a problem is if you are experiencing it everyday for over 8 hrs a day! Kinda like sweetnlow in rats causing cancer, but last time I checked my church was still dishing out the sweetnlow.

man, I hate to see that shit in Texas...I thought that crap would never fly there.
Texas is changing - has been changing rapidly for some years now -private property rights and rugged individualism and fair play replaced by big business interests.....any Texans out there agree?

They just passed one in AZ although you can still smoke with some restrictions on outside Patios and B&Ms are unaffected.
Little by little we lose our individualism and slowly slide into the abyss.

Its sad. California has been on the forefront of this. I hate seeing our simple enjoyments gradually legislated away.

The good news... The Texas legislature ends their session on Monday. If they don't have this passed by then, it won't get passed. In Texas, the legislature only meets every other year.

True, but right about now they are voting around the clock. On another note, I heard earlier this afternoon that the bill is really watered down and is just a bunch of nothing. Essentially all it requires is that the own post a sign that says they allow smoking. I'm not sure how accurate this is, but I'm planning on reading HB 9 this weekend while sit outside smoking a stogie.

BTW Altercall send me you addy, just in case you piss me off enough I have to blow you mailbox up.:timebomb:

I ain't gonna make it that easy for you to destroy my mailbox.:waving: If you want to learn a little more about HB 9 talk to Beagleone over on ICC. I met him at an event with Gorge Padron earlier tonight and he seems to be the most knowledgeable person I've met thus var on the subject. From what I gather, it is pretty watered down, but it will still be a hassle. Some people think that the fact that it is watered down will lead to it's demise.
