I keep an expandable (telescoping) baton with me in the car. I had some training on it a few years back and I liked it. It can be lethal if necessary but will more likely be good for putting someone down quick.
no martial arts though....

Chinese Kenpo here. I started when I was 5 years old and was very serious about it until my mid teens. I still play around with it to keep my skills intact. You never know when someone might try to get froggy which ya.

I have taken an interest in self defense in my old age (44 years old). Been taking Filipino martial arts classes. Called "Kali". Basically stick and knife fighting.

I keep 5 pounds of C-4 strapped to me at all times. I never know when I might run into Rob Reiner.

Black Belt in Tang So Do from my teens. Unfortunately, I haven't kept in practice. I've thought about taking it back up, but as Cliff said, time's a factor.

I rely on intimidating looks.

Laugh all you want, but it works. The only thing is you have to be willing to get in a fight if the look does not work.

Command precense....If you carry yourself in the manner that nobody can f-with you...If you exude that attitude...Chances are, they won't.....But, as was said, if that fails, you WILL have to fight...In that case, I have several things to fall back on..Depending on where I am, what I'm doing....Walking around that place I took my mountain vacation..It was all about the command precense....Hadj may only have 1 magazine..If you look like you would destroy him in a heartbeat, he probably will not risk it on you..If you and your patrol come through, looking like a bunch of rag bags, not payin attention...He may decide you're worth...Same thing applies stateside...

Now, I'm not saying eye-f**K everybody you walk by, by any means..>Don't do that, it will probably get your ass kicked/arrested/etc etc...

My backup stateside, if looks and attitude don't do it...well, I follow the sliding scale, just as they teach in law enforcment...Start with your lowest force option, and escalate as needed...Lowest force would be attitude/appearance..If that doesn't work..Then I'll go hands on (Krav Maga, Judo, and level 3 combatives courtesy of the US Army), if that doesn't work, I usually have a chemical agent with me (mace, CS, something like that), next step would be a blade, almost always have one of those as well...If, after using, or skipping over those different levels of force, there is still a threat, then I've got 231 grain hydrashoks..

I'm not a big man so I have to rely on skill, speed and strength. I do have a black belt in Chinese Kenpo and have had to use those skills on occasion. When I was young and stupid...I got into more than a few fights. But, I haven't been in a fight for about 10 years. I only keep up with my training for the just in case situations. I will say that I love the fact that I know I can defend my family. Really thats the only thing that matters.
