This one has me stumped. I am gonna try and condense this problem as much as possible.

Moved into our house in 1997. Replaced the carpet in 3 rooms in 2001. Within a year, a dark black stain started to appear around the perimeter of all 3 rooms. Slowly got worse to the point that I am hand scrubbing it with bissell cleaner and sucking it up with the little green machine. Comes up relatively easy. Looks like coffee in the tank that holds the sucked up water.

My wife runs an emaculate household. Vacuums and dusts atleast twice a week. Naturally, I am curious as to what is causing it so I can eliminate the problem while I have it clean.

Heat is baseboard. Walls are drywall.

Someone suggested that if the base of the drywall wasn't caulked before putting on the baseboard, that perhaps dirt is falling through the wall. No idea on the merit of it.

The rooms with the original carpet also have the stains now but not as noticeable since the carpet is older and darker. I do not remember them there when we moved in. Even used a carpet cleaner before moving furniture in and I would think I would have noticed it.

Thoughts? What are your thoughts on the type of vaccuum cleaner causing it? We have used the same vaccuum since we moved into this house.

Attached is a pic...it doesn't do it justice but you will get the idea.

If a vaccuum was causing it, then it should be in the middle of the room too. Interesting mystery though :scratchhe

Here are some black marks that measure the smae distance from the front wheels to the back of the vaccuum.

Is it happening at where the carpet meets both interior and exterior walls?
Everywhere in the 1500 square feet of my upstairs. Interior meeting interior and interior meeting exterior.

You tried cleaning the head of the vacuum? Run a Q-tip under it to see if any black comes off. Your "Fix'em" threads are so good Dave

The vac is the only constant since moving in. Been slowing cleaning/scrubbing the carpet and the vac possibility hit me tonite. I guess why I asked is I am a push away from buying a new vaccuum tomorrow.

Yea I would try cleaning the vacuum cleaner itself to see if that is what it is... but if it leaves after you vacuum and then reappears later on in the week then that would ruin that idea....

I dont know... its a good question though

Sounds like you should try a new vacum. It could be on the edge of the walls a lot because that is where the vacum stays stationary the most.

Or...some type of problem with exhaust/dirt being blown out and settling along the edges.

That filtration link that Brian posted makes sense to me.

Is your current vaccum designed with an 'edge cleaner'? It could just be that the vaccum isn't actually vaccuming along the edges of the casing of the vaccum.

Dave... I had a similar thing happen in my apartment many years ago. For me, it ended up being an issue with the POS Vacuum that I was using. I never found the exact reason, but when I got a new vacuum... this issue went away for me anyway.

Currently we are using a Dyson vacuum. Despite the price tag, it is an amazing vacuum. I was very skeptical at first when the wife wanted it but now that we have had it for a while I am quite please with it. It works better than any other vacuum I have seen or tried and it never loses suction power.
