Brief update:

I've invested in some new hygrometers and a pack of boveta packets (62 %). The hygrometers showed that the humidity in the glass jar was about 80 %. I've started airing out the jar (and the tupperware container), and since January, they've been at around 65 % RH.

I've also bought 4 JLP Nacionales in November, to use them to test the smoking conditions. I've had one yesterday, and it didn't really go to well. The first third was sort of OK (as much as one could expect from JLP), the rest had the bitter and resinous taste that I've had from the rest of the cigars after the humidity shot up. Will try the rest before trying more expensive cigars. On the other hand, I've also had a Macanudo Ascot from the tupperware container, and it smoked very well (mild & creamy, ligthly spicy, no sign of bitterness in the first half). So, I guess I'll get a couple of those to probe the conditions in the glass jar.

in a glass jar you do not need any humidification......it's a sealed system and should keep cigars constant for a long time.
Perhaps the cigars came in contact with the contents of the water pilow, hence the tast.
Your cigars are also too moist, let them dry down to 62 to 65 %.......

Agreed that the cigars are too moist.

Hve not heard that sealed units require no humidification.

sealed unit..........sealed,no air in,no air out.
Why would you need a boveda in a sealed unit?
Same idea as a cigar in a glass or metal tube, the cigar has enough moisture in it........;)

The cigars have been at 65 % since January.

As far as the water pillow packet is concerned, the cigars didn't come in direct contact with it, but perhaps it released something in the air...

Boveda packs touching your cigars won't make any difference. And if you want the cigars to acclimate to a lower RH your still going to need to use a Boveda.

Does that extend to bigger sealed units, like fridges/wineadors, coolers?

But that would be contingent on the cigars having the proper humidity to begin with. If you get your smokes from a shop that maintains a higher than what you prefer humidity, when you put it in your jar, with no way of pulling the humidity out (boveda pack/KL/other two way humidifications system) you'll maintain the higher humidity. Same thing with a dryer stick. The two way humidifications system makes sure your stick is at the humidification YOU choose.

In addition, with a sealed unit, it will maintain that humidification as long as you keep the container closed... I'm sure OP would love to smoke his cigars rather than just look at them...

You're both saying that I could set up my humidors at let's say 65% humidity and take out all humidification devices and leave them that way for a year or two or ten and it would remain at 65% if I did not open them?

If that's true, why are not all aging humidors set up that way?

I don't see why you wouldn't be able to do that, as long as there is an airtight seal, however, you would have to be sure it was air tight.

I pose this question to you, in a perfect environment that is airtight, maintains the proper temperature, and left for ten years, where would the humid air go?

before this debate gets outta hand, first off, I wouldn't place my life in the hands of the tightness of that seal, and second, I do open the jar now and then to shuffle the sticks around.

So anyhow, the vibe I'm getting from you is that 65 % should be an OK RH, so I'll proceed with the plan as stated above (smoke some more JLPs).

Idk the answer to that except that if the temp drops and its cool in my basement i lose humidity fast and its hard to maintain.
if it gets cool enough, then the humidity sticks on the walls and the air gets dryer.

Oh no, too late, it's already out of hand!!! ;)

65% would be okay if that's what you like... :)

You do not "lose"humidity when the temp falls.
Remember the word "relative" humidity refers to humidity at a known temp and level.
70% at 70 degrees is the same "relative" humidity as 65% at 65 degrees,or 75% at 75 degrees.Humidity in a containment follows temperature,for tobacco storage,down to 60 degrees.Below 60 degrees,the atmosphere cannot maintain enough moisture .
Above 75 degrees, beetles are the danger,so you see it is a narrow window of useable storage.
In the mid 80s,to the late 90s,a great deal of research was done and I followed it closely.Absorption rates of wrapper versus filler, off gassing, speeding up ageing, optimum storage, crop improvement, all of this info was available.
Try and find it now anywhere except from the old guys like me who were there..........
