I have been working for a development company since Jan. when I graduated from college. About 2 months ago after working roughly 50 plus hours a week all spring and summer. I get told by my "boss" there that I can't work from home anymore. Being that I am a sub contractor I was like WTF? Why are you telling when and where I can work from, being I'm not an employee, So I agree and my hours drop to 40 to 43 hrs a week. Then earlier this week I get a huge bomb dropped on me. Now All non salaried employees are down to 30 hrs a week until further notice. This comes down from the owner himself. Great, I just basiclly lost an entire paycheck a month. Now I'm pissed, that really blows. Being a sub contractor really sucks, now I have to get out and try to find other companies to work for. What the hell else can go wrong with this damn job? All I want to do is to work a normal job and enjoy life. I guess not!

Welcome to life.

It sounds like the company is having financial difficulties.

Those are bad signs dude, I'd suggest you start looking for other employment. I'd guess the company has maybe 6 months to 12 months left in it.
Yup. Standard sign the the company is losing business, market share or is having cash flow problems for other reasons.

Hang in there. In each of our lives there are seasons. Perhaps you're about to walk into something better?

Are you ready for that?

I hear you bro, that does suck and I can relate! I would start looking around, just take this latest instance as a fore-warning.

The Corporate world is no different, I've been let go twice in 3 years, luckily for me I managed to go elsewhere in the company, but it still sucks!

Welcome to the modern business world. Unless you work for a hot company like Google, you will generally have to deal with rollercoaster business cycles. This is especially true for sub-contractors as they are usually project driven. Plus you have to compete with a global workforce who will do the job for much less $. These recent events may just mean a short term slowdown - or it could be more serious.

Working from home is great, but you often miss the daily interactions with folks who know the pulse of the company. Sounds like you need to start networking with folks inside and outside your employer to get a better picture of what's going on. Never hurts to keep your options open though.

It's pretty much been said. Companys are now driven to provide stockholder value at all costs. It used to be in a downturn everyone tightened their belts and worked harder. Now its layoff, cut people cut hours but expect staff to maintain or exceed current production levels. The use of outside contractors is also very much on the rise because they can be cut easily without all the employment red tape.

Networking is excellent advice. Find out what is happeningin your industry. The only this the remains the same is change.

Sorry to hear that, but like many said a lot of companies are cyclical. We have a great years recently in pretty much most area of our country. It is only natural for thing to pull back every now and then. As for labor, many companies tend to overpay people during the good times and have to cut during the bad. Not sure if this is what is happening to your job, but contract labor is a huge variable cost especially when you hit OT. Don't be too surprised that they are not letting you go over 40.

But like is has been said Networking is one of the greatest things you can do for yourself in the business environment. It is one thing that will help you keep your job in bad time and jump start your career in the good. Good luck,
