hey guys, thanks for the thoughts. Life has gotten much shittier here. The girlfriend well now ex, has completely moved out. and I still haven't found work. None, I'm completely screwed. Can't pay the bills. Not good. But I always seem to land on my feet. But this one looks hairy.
Sorry to hear about your situation. I can't believe there is no opportunity for employment for you though. You may have to work in a different field or for less money, but there are always jobs to be found. Less income is still better than none.
If nothing else, consider moving (at least temporarily) to a place where jobs in your primary field are better. This should be pretty easy for a young, single guy. They are still re-building down in MS and LA from Katrina ... so you might check there first. Construction is less seasonal all across the south and even though the housing market is in the tank right now, people are still building and remodeling.
Taking a road trip can also expose you to new people, new opportunities and new challenges. You've got a long life ahead and I'm sure this will not be the only bump in the road.

Depending on what he does, I'm not sure coming down would be worthwhile. Most of the jobs are heavily dominated by Latinos. The legal guys all work in plumbing, electrical, etc.
Donk, I hope something comes around for you soon but don't bother with Michigan, we've got 7% unemployment here and the housing market is in the toilet. A bunch of us have had houses for sale for a year plus (mine's going on a year in Dec.) and they're just not getting requests for showing anything.
Cliff ... he said he has been doing design work for a residential development company. His experience plus a college degree should open doors somewhere. There are many opportunities out there ... plus lots of online resources to help.
If I was laid off right now (knock wood) ... I'd have my resume on every online job site I could find by tomorrow. I'd also be checking out temp agencies, head hunters and Craigslist locally ... then start branching out to include cities further and further away.
Colleges are also a good source for info on jobs. I'd suggest checking in with counselors at your alma mater and see what advice they can offer. Hell, you paid for part of their employment, they could at least help you find a new job.

I have spent a better part of a year on all of those Monster.com, Career builder. And sending my resume to every hiring agency for damn near 100 mile radius. I belong to the colleges employment board online, and I have my application in at several temp agencies in town for temp work. I am thinking the only thing I can do at this point to keep from getting evicted from my apartment is to pick up like two part-time jobs and get registered for school starting in Jan. Belive me guys, I have tried really hard and long to find a job, in my field. I think I made a poor descision when choosing my major. So I am going to go back and get a different degree. I hope. thanks for all the kind words and wisdom, That is why I love this group. Because you guys really do care.
Don't rule out a career in a different field. It's amazing how many people go to college and graduate in one area (residential design work for you), but end up doing something that is completely unrelated to their degree.

When I quit school, I was working as an apartment maintenance guy and continued in the field without looking back. Who would have thunk one could make a career in the apartment maintenance world? I moved up the ladder (no pun intended) quickly and now make a very good living for someone still in their 20's who doesn't have a college degree.
Broaden your horizons and don't be afraid to try something new. A lot of employers are content with a college degree even if it's unrelated to the field they are hiring for.

Donk, have you expanded your search as far as Madison yet? It's tough all over, but Madison is more insulated than most areas from economic downturns..... All the university and governement jobs means more stable employment. Hang in there bro.

I've been reading about your plight, and thought I would put in my two cents. I have lived and worked in the Maryland and Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC all my life (electronics/telecommunications), and the great thing about living here is that it is all but impervious to economic ups and downs. The money that gushes from DC (our hard earned tax dollars) keeps the local economy cooking even in the worst of times. When it comes to making money, go where the money is, and theres plenty of money in this area. Im sure Wisconsin is a beautiful place to live, but its never going to have the economy that some other areas have. As for your ex-girlfriend, she showed her true colors when the going got tough. The biggest favor she ever did for you was to move out. BTW, DC is a very target rich environment for women! :lady:

It sound's like you've got a lot of bases covered. The key word at the moment, flexibility. Once you get some income flowing in, you can then make those really important decisions about what direction you want to go in.
