Color variation is natural. The way Pete has been bringing the htf's to market lately......well.

what was this advice?? i have a box of red and black but i haven't opened either.
A number folks on here have recommended this...or at least taking the caps off since the sticks seemed wet for a while. I just decided I didn't need the extra decoration taking up extra space in my humi....As neat as it looks, it adds nothing to the quality of the stick.

That is quite a variation!! hopefully it still tastes consistent. I would rather buy a less "pretty" looking cigar that isn't dyed, over a dyed cigar that looks a bit better.

What is the dying process anyways? What do they use when they dye their cigars?

Pepin will never use any form of dye. The wrapper is natural and the selection process on the blacks is a little extra work for Jaime and Pepin. During finish packaging, the cigars were graded by color but once in the tubes, the colors were impossible to see and get perfect in each box..The wrapper is the same just a different color......

Reds were the same way. I agree with what's been said once they tube them they probably sit a while then get boxed and they don't bother to try to match them.

Haven't tasted a difference though. :)

I agree, variation doesn't bother me at all.

As far as dye, they use a part of the tobacco plant itself for this (maybe the stalk?). Pete has said Pepin doesn't dye his sticks, he's just stated as much again. I certainly have no reason to doubt this. But dye is VERY common in the industry these days, which is sad.

It is kind of like [ame="http://www.botl.org/community/forums/showthread.php?t=34901"]my question[/ame] regarding the different color wrappers of Noellas (regular release '09). I have a thread on here about it, Pete just said that it is pretty common with the brown label. Maybe the same for the black tubos.

Thanks Pete, that's enough for me.

Rather than wrapper color, I would like to know how long those blacks were aged before they were put out, so I can gauge how long it will take for them to be as good as the robustos of earlier releases. Honestly they seemed a little young when they came out, and i'm just trying to get a handle on whether I should wait a few years for them to marry a bit more completely, or if they had already been aged awhile and just need a few more months to settle down in they're new surroundings. At two months, they've become pretty good, but they still don't have that great taste i got out of those robustos.
respect to pj, apologies for altering topic
