For years I have had a real problem describing the cigars that I smoked; "flavors of this or hints of that", because to me it was either a cigar that "I" thought was "good or damn good" or it was a cigar "I" just didn't like at all!

Well, Nestor Miranda finally put it into words for me, you can find his quote in the Summer 2010 issue of Smoke Magazine....

"I don't know if my cigars are nutty or creamy, or if they have leathery or cedary notes. For me, they are great cigars .... wonderful smokes."

Thank you Nestor Miranda!

That's nice to hear. I've always had troubles describing flavors in cigars myself which is why I don't post reviews but rarely.

I can understand. I'm new to cigar smoking (April 2010) but have developed my palate to pick up on the "flavors" of cigars. I am into fine wines and the concept is the same. You really don't "taste" those flavors, your palate "associates" with these common tastes.
I did some research and found that we all have taste buds, some have way more than others. There is a little test to see if you have a lot. I found myself to have what they call "super taste buds" (over 150 in a small area). This is the reason why I can "taste" and associate the flavors. This is true for wines, cigars, and food. You also loose taste buds from your palate as you grow older.
I agree with everyone though, either you like it or you don't. Everyone's taste is different, if you like it smoke it. Be Blessed...

I had the pleasure of meeting Nestor at the Cigar Snob party this year and I have to say, he was one of the nicest guys I could imagine (and he had some damn fine arm candy hanging around him LOL)!!

That sums up my cigar experiences pretty well, too. If I were to start posting in the reviews section, my posts would consist of either:
"Pretty damn tasty."
or
"Crap, I just wasted 8 bucks."

I guess I could just post yer quote, and a pantload of pictures.

(Palate not refined enough to appreciate good wine, either.)

Yup...Same here! I also have a hard time picking out the small flavor details in a cigar. I try to give reviews when possible on the ones that I can really get a flavor detail of. It's not that I don't taste a flavor it's just that I'm not sure how to desribe it sometimes.

Larry, that's how I feel a lot of the time. Once in a while I pick up a distinct flavor but mostly I just like it or not.

Thanks Larry, I really envy those that can get the various nut flavors, sweetness flavors, coffees, spices, peppers, etc.

Same here, I pick up the basic, its a coffee, spice, pepper, creamy, earthy, etc. tastes. But pick a lot up exhaling some trough the nose and of course smelling the cigar/smoke. And then its either I like it or don't. Without picking out the specific nuances it would be hard for me to do a review since I cannot articulate that well.
