Then use a cheap cutter for the trim. I can't tell you how many cigars trimming the head on the final third salvaged the smoke of a good cigar. Sometimes I end up cutting it two or three more times. But as @sofc said, it doesn't help a cigar that just bitter/bad.
And I definitely agree with trying the sungrown version, as I mentioned to @pippin when we were discussing the Chateaus. Adds a whole lot of flavor to the cigar. I still pick up a sungrown Chateau once in a while.
I absolutely agree. I like strong cigars and I like medium to smaller ring gauge. On these sticks build up is natual on a cigar that is a little wet or even if I am smoking a little too fast. Nothing worse than getting build up to ruin a good cigar. Tar on you tongue, bleh. I cut away the offending tip and keep going. If needed, cut a little more. Its not like you are going to smoke that part. Never had a big issue with my cutters

@pippin, just a warning, the fresh Sungrown has a lot more pepper than the natural. It settles down with age, but just be prepared for a lot more pepper on the lips and tongue. Of the 858s it's by far the best, and the only one I still like, but thought you should be warned.

Thanks man. I am going to fire it up in a minute.
