This is why you should have a dash cam.

So, couldn't be a year for me without some involvement in a motor vehicle accident. I have notoriously horrible luck, BTW.

So this happened yesterday in El Paso.

The driver of the other vehicle and their passengers were unaware of two left turning lanes and came out of their vehicle asking me why I'd hit them.

They even told the cops I rear ended them. Until the cops came to ask my side it seemed pretty open and shut, I must have rear ended them. Until I showed the cops this video, that is.

No witnesses stopped. No other testimony besides mine and the 4 occupants of the other car. If it came down to our stories it would have been 4 to 1, and I would have been at fault.

Heck, when I initially filed the claim with my insurance their program defaulted to placing fault on me.

But with this little 18 second video, there is no argument whose at fault.

Get a dash cam folks. I paid under $150 for this one last year, it's now paid for itself in spades!

@multi-useless I'm mostly okay, it wasn't a high speed or major enough accident to lay me out, however, I was involved in a hit and run last year and if you've kept up with my threads you know I had to have surgery as a result of it. Well, I steer with that hand, and apparently it didn't like the sudden jolt.

I think I may get xrays on it tonight.

I've been considering getting one of these myself. Albuquerque drivers are HORRIBLE! Which one do you have?
Man, used to live in ABQ, I'll actually be heading up there soon to get some things from my storage unit. We should get together.

I have a MINI 0806 from spytecinc but as I understand it their quality control is crap and I just got lucky that I received a good one.

BTW, that uninsured hit and run driver I was referring to was none other than a wonderful resident of the burque!

Drivers here are the absolute worst! I can't even count how many times I've almost been hit in my Jeep, which I don't understand at all. It's BRIGHT green!
We should definitely get together. When are you coming back?

The double lane left. Some people will just never figure it out ........
The double right lane is even worse!

If it had been a single left turn they are not allowed to make the turn directly in to the right lane anyway, so they were intentionally and unintentionally wrong.

Does this cam just store the video until it runs out of space, and then record over itself on a loop? When something happens you turn it off and grab the video in question?

first and foremost - im glad you werent hurt in the fender bender. in the bigger scheme, cars are just "things".
if you guys witness an accident, please pull over and assist. I try to do this with every accident i witness because unlike Joe, not everyone has a dash cam.

also, check with your state...if you live in an area where they do not care who is at fault (an accident is an accident) then you wont need a dash cam.

Don't like this at all.

@KookaRocha it's impressive, looks like you rear ended that car on the right side. When I rear end someone, I usually hit the rear end. ;)
I don't like it either. I live in a state (Ohio) that does not have no fault rules, but my city borders Michigan that is a no fault state and I have to drive there frequently. The drivers from Michigan are wild as heck in my opinion, even when they come down to Ohio where they could be at fault and responsible if they cause an accident.

unfortunately, some states are "no fault" states. if you T-Bone my car, my insurance would cover my damages, you insurance would cover your damages. just the way it is.
and I feel comfortable saying everyone's insurance goes up, or at the least, gets a smudge that makes them look at you more stringently
