Has anyone ever tried growing a tobacco plant in their yard or garden just for the heck of it?

We spend so much time enjoying and talking about cigars, but relatively few of us have ever seen an actual tobacco plant.

Of course climate and other considerations might make this impossible...Just thought I'd see if anyone has done this!

That's kind of a cool idea... just have a tobacco plant in the backyard... It would be nice to look at, and if they get as big as the ones you see in the Fuente or Pepin pictures that would be awesome!

I live in North Carolina. There is tobacco all over the place down here. I see it everyday on the ride to work during the growing season, from sprout to full maturity.

I know, its not cigar tobacco, but as far as appearance, I don't believe there is much if any difference visually....

I grew up pulling tobacco in Virginia...the wax on the leaves will give you a killer buzz and the snakes that crawl up the stalks will make you run the fastest you've ever run.

I've thought about it, kind of a neat idea. Probably won't get around to it this year, but I hope once I get the yard in shape to have a garden planted. Where do you get seeds from :scratchhe.

I had a chance to, but never had the desire. Tobacco is susceptible to some diseases which will affect my other plants. It just sounded too much like growing your own grapes to make wine. I don't think I could ever make something good enough for me to want to consume. Now If I lived in sonoma or cuba, it might make a difference.

I want to try when I can grow more than potted vegetables. I want to grow tobacco and hops but I have a feeling plants of these size the homeowners association will frown upon. Assholes.

WOW...not sure what's better knowing you was able to acheive something many can't or being able to share part of that process with one of the best cigar makers... Thanks for sharing the links...

I have not grown yet myself, but I have ordered some seeds so I will keep everyone updated
Thanks again for the great articles, simply amazing IMO

Secondary question, Does anyone what what the specific plant is they grow that have the huge leaves in the pepin videos? Conn broadleaf or frog eye orinoco, etc?
