thanks for enlightening me on "buzz killington."
Had zero expectations that the OP would give up on smoking in his rental car on reading my reply.\
Have, and probably will continue to, smoke in my POV...as long as I am the only one subjected to
the smelly results, all is well. It is my personal space, safe from intrusion...so far anyway!
My preferences were only meant to apply to using/abusing a car or room not my own.
Most of the responses so far seem directed to how to avoid the repercussions of deliberately disregarding
the policies of the car rental company, not to the issue of whether it is right, or smart, to do so.
On that point we will each decide for our own... my view is CLEARLY in the minority camp....I have been
THERE before.
Enjoy your trip and your cigar(s)!
Uh, lighten up dude. It was a fun jest at what we all know is the right thing to do.

On rant.
But then lets look at the right thing. Do we always do the right thing? Probably not. Smoking is intrinsically a wrong thing. Buying habanos is a wrong thing. Driving faster than the speed limit, yep a wrong thing. Having one beer and driving, a wrong thing... We all choose the point in our lives when we say, "will this cause harm?" Why can I not smoke in my convertible car in Calabasas, CA. The smoke police took that away. Why can I not smoke a cigar on the beach in Santa Monica, far from any person on the rocks? The smoke police took that way. I should be able to rent a car that allows me to smoke a cigar. I used to but the smoke police took that away. So if I can get away with it and not cause harm. Sorry, I am tired of the smoke police interfering with my pursuit of happiness.
Off rant.

Yep. Just emailed him and apologized.
I don't think you should need to apologize, we are allowed to have a difference of opinion. I was fooling around about your smoke police comment. I see both sides of it. But, personally, I side with him. I feel I should be able to fire up that tasty cigar while I am outside, sitting in a public park, but when there are enclosed places, I don't think I have the right to do it. Would I like to smoke in a rental car? Sure, but am I? No, not at all. Simply because of the sissies. The whiners who ruin all fun for everyone. I am going to smoke where I am allowed to smoke, because if I smoke where I'm not allowed to smoke, they will take more from me.

Chuck, replied to your PM. For the record, as my post might have seemed condescending, an apology
was hardly necessary. One should never inflict his opinion on others without realizing there will be
strong dissent.
Honestly I try to lighten up but often fail miserably... but I WILL continue to try, guys!
Regards and thanks to all for providing a place where even less popular views can be
expressed and tolerated, if not loved!!!

For me it all comes down to $$$$....if caught is it worth the $250 fee? I don't think it is so I don't smoke a cigar in a rental as I wait til I get to my destination and light up then. Why take a risk when it could cost you rather than just getting out of the car and then enjoy your cigar w/o regrets or worry?

I have had the same thought, is the cigar I smoke worth the fine if caught. So that alone has kept me from smoking in one, I don't have the funds to pay if I so happened to be caught.

As everything in life, you calculate the risks/rewards. (That is, if you aren't too personally bothered by the concept in the first place; which I suppose involves a different sort of risk.)
For me, the risk is often worth the reward. I've found the risk relatively low up to this point. And it isn't unusual for me to put 1K miles on a rental in a week, so the reward of smoking in that car can be high to me. Ask me again after I've been hit with my first cleaning fee and my answer may change.
