For those of you with limited collections :)grinFU: to those with unlimited collections:grinFU: ) what do you try for? A large variety of sticks, constant box-splits to bring in as many different types as possible? Or do you stick to a select few and bring in full boxes with the occasional 5'er here and there to "spice things up"?

Just curious. I'm sure this has something to do with how long you've been in the hobby as well. I fall into the first category, but want to be in the second category...of course the "select few" happen to cover just about all the cigars out there. :smokingbo

I also fall into the first category. I am still experimenting with what I want my "staples" to be. So I have almost exclusively been participating in 5ers, variety packs, and the occasional box split (some party shorts with vipe). I am so glad I found this forum so I can have the opportunity to learn and buy from all of you. I am confident that once i do figure out what brands are my "must haves" I will switch over to buying boxes with occasional 5ers to try new things. Great question though, I am interested to see what others think.

Jason great question..I look forward to seeing what others are doing.
For me, I just buy boxes. I should order some fivers as my singles drawer in the humi is lacking...but the good part is the pullout shelves are filling up quite nicely :grinFU:

That being said, there are plenty of smokes I havent tried yet - and I am dying to try 'em all. Next order I may just order fivers of 5 that I have been wanting to try.

I'm solidly in the second category. I've tried most of the popular and some of the not-so-popular brands over the years ... so I've pretty much narrowed down what I enjoy. These days I generally buy boxes of my favorite vitolas. However I will occasionally buy samplers of new brands / new blends.

Second category here - I mostly buy boxes of what I like with an occasional fiver of something new (or too expensive for a whole box)

I am attempting to build a collection so to that end, I have mainly bought boxes. I also want to experience as many different brands as possible so I have recently got into box splits and fivers. I have found that this helps in determining what I really like and what I want to add to the collection.
My goal is to have a box around of my favorites for smokeing and at least one of the same brand for aging.

I buy only what I know I like.....usually if a cigar I get gifted rocks my small cigar world I'll try and find it online and buy a box. For instance.....Punch RS#12 that was gifted to me in a trade. I now have 2 boxes, and the list could go on :help:

My collection is still limited but I don't buy many fivers any more. I'm saving fiver money up to buy boxes and I prefer to buy cabs of 50 when I can swing it. Same idea as the two box plan. When I'm half done the cab, I'd like to leave the other half to age and pick up another cab, and so on. Pricier cigars like Sublimes or smokes I haven't tried I still buy fivers of.

I am still buying fivers or 10ers. Not made the jump to a box yet...someday.

I am getting down what I dont like more than what I do like.
What I mean is I am figuring out what I dont ever want again.
But I do give them multiple tries.

I think the first box will be mag46s this fall.

I'm sliding into the second category ...

... but starting out (and still today) I like doing box splits with someone else. Keeps the singles drawer populated. Also will grab the odd fiver of aged or difficult to find cigars.

A friend and I were chatting about the new Partagas P2s. Most vendors still have them in boxes of 10 - haven't seen many 25s released yet. And that's fine with me. Wouldn't mind seeing more of that. See them with Siglo VI and some other sticks. I would still spend the same amount I do now ... maybe even more? ... but would mix it up some.

Yep, I agree Geoffrie. I'm a fan of those 10 count boxes as well, so long as I'm not paying a huge premium vs the 25 count box per stick.

I don't have the cash flow yet to be in the second category. I'm stilling trying out a lot of things so i prefer, for now, to buy samplers of 5 or so.

Geoffrie...glad to see you around.

I do agree about the 10 count boxes.

I like to buy boxes in fact. I still though pick up the occasional fiver or so to give something I'm not sure about a chance or something not so common. I like to buy the boxes this way I can smoke a couple and then let it sit and age. I've found a few things I really like and want in my humidor at all times like the Epi 2, JL 2, VR Famoso and such. AS for the 10 ct. boxes I do like the P2's in them. This way I was able to sample them and see if I liked and not have to dump alot of money into something I hadn't tried first.

Considering I'm just getting into the darkside of cigars, I'm very much in the category of a wide variety...all 15 or so that I have. I have several sizes from the same brand, but no doubles of any of them.

I usually purchase full boxes. If they don't excite me I know I can move them and get something else. I really like the fact that they have been coming out with 10 & 15 packs to try. This is the perfect way to try a couple of brands for about the price of a 25ct box. That bieng said I still purchase fivers and do occasional splits.

Variety baby!

The only thing preventing me from buying a variety of boxes as opposed to fivers is the wife. Don't get me wrong, she has no problem with me buying cigars with my quarterly bonus but she is adimant about no more storage.

Shit, buying and doing splits are so much fun I have to give away cigars to you guys to make room for my splits. :eyebrow:

If I ever get a cabinet humidor I would likely get it with two singles drawers and room for about 15 boxes. That way I can still do the splits and such and also have full boxes of my favorites sleeping.

When I began, I would try as many marques/vitolas as possible via 5 packs. I'm at the point now where I know what I like, and buy full boxes. But I still can't resist 5 packs of smokes either....

I buy boxes, sometimes without even trying a single. I am of the firm belief that there is a time and place for every habanos. Therefore, I never feel I end up with a box that I don't like or need (!). Of course there are some that I like better than others. Ocassionaly I will have singles gifted or traded but I never buy 5 packs, simply because of the cost factor. This has been my routine since I started smoking mainly cubans- actually I did the same with NC, though I traded 5 packs to get more variety.
