With the newest release out I thought i would reach back into the humi to see how the 2nd release (glowing band) is doing. The first few I smoked was hit or miss and it became apparent they did not live up to the original release. However the one I smoked tonight definately seems to be kicking into gear with stronger flavors then a few months ago. The only issue I still have with these is burn and draw is inconsistent.

Anyway sitting on close to a box of these and hoping they continue to improve. Has anyone lit one up lately and if so how do you feel they are progressing?

I thought about torching one but only 3 left and only 1 Daisy Cutter.
I did find burn issues with the wmd and moab also which were rott.
Seems to be inherent with S&B's. Really ashame for a short smoke and the price.
May have to torch a ? this weekend. Nice to hear they are coming around.

They need time. Smoking a SnB ROTT is a waste. Give them 6 months and they are much improved. Definitely much drier as well.

It seems to me that the VAST majority of Viajes are shipped WAY too wet, and need about 3-6 months before they can reach their full potenial...

The only recent (last 6 months)release that I did not feel this way about was the Tower 45th Exclusivo, since they have been aging in boxes for the last 6ish months...

Agreed 100% Brooks. I wonder why they choose to ship them so wet.

Better a little wet than dried up, beetle infested dog sticks. The way I look at Viaje is like a young Bordeaux or Cabernet.......in that, it needs time to reach maturity and full potential. If you have enough sticks in your humi, waiting shouldn't be an issue :cbig:

For a 4 inch 10 dollar cigar, I should be able to smoke it whenever I want. I don't buy cigars to look at, I buy them to smoke. I can say that I will not be seeking out any more of these, thats for sure.

Not that its a bad cigar, its not, I enjoyed the few I have had. My issue is with the price to size ratio, and the burn issues due to wetness or whatever excuse is being used. I feel like a sucker for chasing these down. Live and learn.

Smoke what you like, like what you smoke. Looks like you bought into the hype, as the burn issues etc. are nothing new, and were well documented in other Viaje sticks prior to the release of the Skull and Bones. And you're really missing out on some exceptional cigars that do well with age i.e. Opus, Anejo, Padron Anny etc., but whatever floats your boat!

Yeah I most certainly did. Whatever though. Don't misunderstand me, I have a couple of aged sticks in my humi. What I am saying is that I don't see a cigar and think, "wow I would love to spend 10-12 dollars on this and shove it on a box for 6-18 months". I just don't have the money to do that, if I buy something, its to smoke, not age.

Thats a shame. So many sticks dont reach their full potential until they have been aged a bit.

Ill add by saying this is probably my favorite of the Skull releases. The time in the humi has really contributed to an incredible cigar. Looking forward to this years release as I only have a few left.

Maybe so, but there are so many great sticks I can buy and smoke right off the shelf. Plus, if I really want something aged, my local guy usually has something stashed away.

Glad to hear that! I guess when you have 200-300 sticks in your humi, and you smoke on average 2-3 sticks per week, waiting six months for a stick to age really isn't an issue :squinteye

I agree with this to an extent. Its one thing to age a cigar to bring out the full potential of the flavor but to have to age a cigar to get them to smoke without burn issues is an entirely different issue in my opinion. Consumers shouldnt have to do that especially considering the size and price of the new S&B's.

I have found a few touch ups necesarry on the "?" however I am getting the burnt cherry flavors out of it now like I do with the "original" release Padilla Obsidian Toros. Fantastic. You are lucky to have so many left!

With the exception of some cigars that I Must Try Right Now this is how I buy cigars.

I keep a small desktop humidor with the stuff that's ready to smoke now, and most of the stuff I buy goes into a Tupperware in the basement to chill out for a while. Periodically when the upstairs gets low I see what I've got ready to refill with.

I'm real interested in this thread 'cause I just got impatient enough to bring my "?"'s upstairs. Time to light 'em up?

Just sparked up a VOR#5 after some down time and these are really smoking good. The first few I was not overly impressed with but like the S&B2 these are coming into their own. Glad I have a near full box

I'm pretty sure any Arturo Fuente is good RTT, but better after a year - most exemplified by Anejos.

I would also submit that most Tats are good RTT, but do very well after some sitdown time - Cojonus for example.

I will also state for a fact that CCs are ok young, but better after letting them sit for several years - they turn marvelous.

But we don't crucify these brands. Now think about how much you pay for these cigars.

Now look at how some of you are complaining about Viaje's smoking qualities RTT, and the S&B #2 as of now (after several months). Are we surprised that these smoke better? What is the discussion? Are we just trying to point fingers again without logic? Please advise. Just IMO.

I finally got some of the 2nd releases. I smoked the WMD yesterday and it was freaking awesome. HUGE flavor bomb! They still seam a little young and the flavors haven't come together completely, but boy will these be good six months from now with some down time. Will be looking to try the 2nd release tomorrow.
