If you are waking up not being able to breathe please go see a doctor. I have sleep apnea myself and am on a C-PAP machine. The machine can make a whole world of difference for ou, it can be life changing. Sleep apnea can affect you more then you would think.
Yeah my day has a C-PAP and I've seen the difference. I do realize the effects span more than waking up every now and then in an absence of breathe, cause I do feel the fatigue and aches and pains. I just don't know if at my age its such a big deal.

Agreed. My CPAP has been my best friend for over ten years now. I've had sleep apnea since I was in high school and wasn't overweight at the time. I tend to get so involved in dreams, tv shows, movies and comic books that when I get that way I have to sort of re-tune my brain to my actual surroundings when I tear myself away from them (or wake up) so you're going through something very normal. If you wake up gasping for air or choking you need to see a doctor about it asap. Apnea puts a tremendous strain on your heart.

I agree also with the CPAP machine. My sleep apena comes in the form that my brain doesn't enter into Stage 4 REM sleep, which is the most restoritve part in the sleep cycle. Even though I didn't physically wake up, I was awake mentaly. I always woke up groggy and feeling like I didn't get enough sleep. Once I started using the CPAP my sleep became more productive, I woke up feeling refreshed and I've had more energy (which means I need less energy from food and have started losing weight).

I generally always use the CRAP machine prior to going to bed, too. Often times I find it is necessary almost immediately after waking up, as well.

Sleep Apnea is the first thing that came to mind... But to me it didn't sound like the OP has those symptoms of waking up choking etc...

But I guess it can't hurt to get checked out.

Well as I had mentioned in a later post, I have had dreams of scuba diving (which I am certified in, all the more reason they are so vivid) where I am stuck on the ocean floor and can see the surface but can't reach it. I then wake up gasping for a breath. Not only is it terrifying but it leaves me with slight pain in my lungs all day.

I guess I just figured there was some other explanation for the confusion other than sleep apnea which I had forgotten about. I do believe I have sleep apnea, just a matter of going through all the extensive testing.

The testing isn't as extensive as it used to be. My doc gave me a small device that you wear around your chest for one night. It has a hose contected to it with a nasal apparatus (big word), much like an oxygen tube. The device measures your breathing patterns and oxygen absobtion rate. You bring it back to them the next day. No wires, no electrodes...just a tube and finger clip. Some places do it differently but that's how the people my doctor uses tests. Result typically can take a week or two.
